The racing community has lost a star.
Thirty-year-old rally driver Samuel Ortiz died in a car crash during the Rallye de La Cerámica race in Spain on May 29th. His brother, Jordi Ortiz, was injured in the crash and is currently hospitalized.
During the second stage of the Rally de la Cerámica on Friday afternoon, brothers Jordi and Samuel Ortiz were involved in a severe crash. Sadly, Samuel, who was the co-driver, died instantly, according to a statement from Rallye Club Costa Azahar shared on Facebook May 30.
The committee reported that the driver, 32-year-old Jordi, was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries.
The Rallye Club Costa Azahar confirmed that the second day of the race would be canceled.
The Ceramic Rally 2026 Organizing Committee has cancelled the race out of respect and sadness following the recent events. They expressed their deepest condolences to Samuel’s family and friends, and wished Jordi a speedy recovery, according to a statement.
Circuit racing and rally racing are very different. Circuit races happen on dedicated, paved tracks, while rally races are held on regular public roads over various types of surfaces and can span several days.
On May 30th, the Castellón Province Fire Department reported that Samuel and Jordi were involved in a car crash in Castellón province. Their car hit a guardrail at night, and Samuel died at the scene before emergency services could arrive.
After the news broke, other motorsports competitors shared their condolences. Jose Ramon Planelles Sanchez posted on Facebook, saying, “A lot of sadness in our rally world.”
He shared that they were saying goodbye to a wonderful, cheerful person. He then sent his best wishes and a warm embrace to the person’s family and friends at the Rallye Club Costa Azahar.
Meanwhile, Villaviciosa Motorsport spoke out on the tragedy.
The organization expressed its deepest sympathy to Samuel’s family and friends, offering support to those who knew him. They also wished his brother, Jordi Ortiz, a quick recovery.
