Apple TV’s New 10/10 Sci-Fi Thriller Is Giving TV’s Best Villain in Decades a New Origin

Apple TV+ has released the first spin-off series from the acclaimed show For All Mankind, and it’s already redefining a standout villain from recent television. While For All Mankind has spanned several decades—with Season 5 focusing on the 2012 Free Mars revolution—Star City takes viewers back to the 1960s.

This new series provides a deeper look into the Soviet space program and the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, near Moscow. The show begins with Alexei Leonov’s lunar landing, but portrays a very different reaction within the Soviet Union than what we’ve seen before. While introducing many new characters to the For All Mankind universe, Star City also features younger versions of familiar faces. However, one character stands out as significantly different from how she’s been portrayed previously.

Irina Morozova Is One of For All Mankind’s Best Villains

Viewers first met Irina Morozova in the Season 4 premiere of For All Mankind, titled “Glasnost,” which aired in March 2003. We later learned that this woman was, in fact, Irina Morozova.

Following Fyodor Korzhenko’s (Dimitar Bakalov) takeover, Morozova became the head of Roscosmos and brought in Margo Madison to obtain the asteroid 2003LC, which is rich in iridium. In the show For All Mankind, this version of Morozova, played by Svetlana Efremova, quickly established herself as a dangerous and enigmatic adversary to the American characters.

Irina Morozova was quick to anger and ruthless. She insisted that Svetlana Zakharova be brought back to the Soviet Union from Mars, immediately reported Kirill Semenov to the KGB, and proposed torturing Miles Dale to get information from him, even suggesting this to both CIA and KGB agents. She went so far as to arrange the death of Sergei Nikulov, which caused a rift with Margo Madison.

Morozova, though somewhat changed by her time in prison in For All Mankind Season 5, has always been a complex and challenging opponent. The show hinted at her past as a KGB operative, including her connection to Sergei Nikulov, and the new Star City series delves deeper into this history. However, the Morozova we see in Star City is significantly different from the character we knew in the original series.

Star City Has Transformed Irina Morozova Into a Likable Character

The show has received fantastic reviews, scoring a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and successfully builds upon the world of For All Mankind. Irina Morozova is a particularly interesting character in this new series, as viewers meet her long before she becomes the antagonist we eventually see.

In the series Star City, Agnes O’Casey plays Irina Morozova, a woman who recently moved from Moscow to Star City with her daughter, Zoya (played by Eadie Johnson). Unlike many in Star City who work in science or engineering, Morozova is a KGB agent responsible for monitoring cosmonauts and their families, ensuring their loyalty to the Soviet Union.

Even though her work situation isn’t great, the show Star City has revealed a surprisingly sympathetic side to Irina Morozova. We haven’t seen much of her yet, but she clearly cares deeply for her daughter and isn’t afraid to question authority, like when she refused to shoot Yana Akhmatova (Niamh Algar).

As she develops a close relationship with Lyudmilla Raskova, the head of surveillance at Star City (played by Anna Maxwell Martin), she’s becoming a more ruthless and effective agent. This change is evident when she interrogates and tortures a German man for information in the second episode, “A Bear on a Chain,” marking the beginning of her transformation into the primary antagonist of For All Mankind.

What Does the Future Hold For Irina Morozova & Star City’s Other Characters?

We’ve only met Irina Morozova a couple of times so far, suggesting her character will be explored much further as the show goes on. The series hasn’t mentioned Irina’s daughter, Zoya, which leads us to believe Zoya might not be around for long. If Zoya were to die, it would likely have a huge impact on Irina and drive her to drastic measures.

Irina Morozova isn’t the only character from Star City who might be quite different in the show. When Sergei Korolev first appeared in Season 3 of For All Mankind, he had a conversation with Danielle Poole while she was imprisoned in Star City. He strongly supported the Soviet Union and its space program, which contrasts with the more independent and innovative Korolev we see in Star City.

Sergei Nikulov is quite different. He initially appears deeply proud of being a Soviet citizen in Star City, but his work with the Chief Designer reveals a willingness to bend the rules. In Season 2, Episode 6 of For All Mankind, titled “Best Laid Plans,” when Sergei meets Margo Madison in America, he defects from the Soviet Union and begins making plans to leave with her.

Even though his storyline remains unresolved and we don’t know what will happen to Sergei Korolev, these characters will continue to appear in Star City for a long time. Irina Morozova, still alive in For All Mankind, has now journeyed to Mars and developed a stronger bond with Aleida Rosales (Coral Peña). However, Star City will first show her at her most formidable before she becomes more compassionate in later seasons.
