2 Star Wars Projects Seem More Likely Than Ever After Mandalorian & Grogu Actors’ Recent Comments

Now that The Mandalorian and Grogu are playing in theaters, fans are eager to find out what Star Wars projects are coming next. Several Star Wars movies are reportedly being developed, but so far, only Ryan Gosling’s film, Star Wars: Starfighter, has a confirmed release date – May 28, 2027. The lineup of upcoming Star Wars TV shows is also limited, with only two canon shows officially scheduled: season two of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord and season two of Ahsoka.

Currently, we don’t have release dates for the next two Star Wars shows. This makes it a relatively slow time for the franchise, especially compared to the last few years. Since 2019, Star Wars has been releasing a lot of TV shows, particularly live-action series. Now, that pace seems to be slowing down, possibly with a renewed focus on films. However, we can expect announcements about future shows and movies soon.

Details about upcoming Star Wars projects are still largely unknown, though fans have many ideas – like a film or series focused on Darth Vader, or a live-action version of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. However, comments from two stars of The Mandalorian and Grogu at Fan Expo Philadelphia suggest that a movie and a surprising TV show are in development, and both will continue existing storylines.

Brendan Wayne Heavily Hinted The Mandalorian And Grogu 2 Will Happen

While Pedro Pascal is well-known as the voice and face of Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, several actors actually portray the character. Brendan Wayne often performs the physical role, being inside the suit and bringing the character’s movements to life. Because of his hands-on involvement, Wayne plays a key role in shaping the character’s future, making his recent statements particularly noteworthy.

At Fan Expo Philadelphia this weekend, actor Wayne discussed the future of Din Djarin and Grogu. He seemed confident that we’ll see the characters again, either in a movie or a TV show. He explained that:

It seems there’s a demand for more stories like ours – at least, that’s how I see it, and the audience response suggests they’re ready for it. We haven’t decided if the next installment will be a movie or a TV show, but I’m leaning towards a film, and I’m excited about what’s to come.

Although it’s not official confirmation of season 4 of The Mandalorian, a continuation titled The Mandalorian and Grogu 2, or any other new project, these comments suggest fans don’t need to worry about these characters disappearing. Interestingly, Jon Favreau seems to think the next installment will be a movie, which goes against what many fans have predicted since The Mandalorian and Grogu aired.

I think the slightly mixed reactions to The Mandalorian and Grogu might have been a worry at first, even though regular audiences clearly loved the movie, as you can see on Rotten Tomatoes. Disney will definitely be looking at how people reacted when they decide if they want to make a sequel, so hopefully, it did well enough to get another movie made! Of course, someone like Wayne, who’s more in the know, would probably have a better idea of what’s happening behind the scenes than us fans right now.

Jonny Coyne’s Comments Suggest The Book Of Boba Fett Season 2 Was In The Works

I was really interested to hear what Jonny Coyne, who played Lord Janu Coin, had to say at the same panel as Brendan Wayne. He talked about what Lucasfilm had planned for him after his work on The Mandalorian Season 3. Apparently, they’d initially envisioned him continuing on with the story, even potentially in a fourth season of The Mandalorian. Honestly, that doesn’t surprise me at all – he was a great addition to the show!

Many viewers knew a fourth season of The Mandalorian was planned before reports suggested it might be changed to The Mandalorian and Grogu. Jon Favreau had previously stated he’d already written scripts for season four. More unexpectedly, Coyne hinted at a possible appearance on The Book of Boba Fett, explaining that:

I was initially told I’d be in season 4 of The Mandalorian, and possibly an episode of Boba Fett, but those plans fell through. Everything changed, and instead, a movie project came up.

The most interesting part of this is that these conversations apparently took place after The Mandalorian season 3 aired—Coyne specifically mentioned things changed after that. Because of this, the discussion about The Book of Boba Fett couldn’t have been about the first season, which came out before The Mandalorian season 3. Instead, Coyne’s comments suggest that Star Wars was once seriously thinking about making a second season of The Book of Boba Fett.

It’s possible Star Wars explored this idea but decided against it, especially given the mixed reaction to the first season of The Book of Boba Fett. However, this information feels new, and interestingly, Temuera Morrison – who was present with Coyne – reacted to the comments as if Coyne was revealing something that wasn’t meant to be public.

Okay, so this is just me speculating, but it seemed like when Temuera Morrison reacted to Jon Favreau saying Pedro Pascal would be in The Mandalorian again, he might have been subtly acknowledging that The Book of Boba Fett didn’t get a second season either. It got me thinking: with Disney seemingly considering a Season 2 for The Book of Boba Fett at one point, and the way the cast was talking at the panel, is it still possible we could see more Boba Fett adventures down the line?

Should Star Wars Move Forward With These Projects?

I’m really hoping we get more adventures with Din and Grogu! While a second season of The Mandalorian and Grogu or The Book of Boba Fett isn’t officially happening yet, everything they shared today makes it feel much more possible. But it still leaves me wondering if Lucasfilm will actually go for it. It sounds like whether or not The Mandalorian and Grogu gets a sequel movie will really depend on how well the first one does. Basically, they’ll be looking at both what critics say and how much money it makes. If it’s a hit with both reviewers and audiences – and so far, it definitely seems to be! – then a follow-up movie feels like a natural next step.

A second season of The Book of Boba Fett would be tricky. Despite Temuera Morrison’s talent and the popularity of Boba Fett, the show wasn’t well-received and is considered one of the lowest-rated Star Wars projects. So, a renewal would be unexpected. However, Star Wars is full of surprises, and after the success of The Mandalorian and Grogu, the franchise might be open to revisiting that storyline.
