In 2015, Until Dawn became a popular game for the PlayStation 4, despite a challenging development process. Now, over ten years later, the original developer, Supermassive Games, is releasing a full sequel, Until Dawn 2, which was first shown at the PlayStation State of Play event in June.
Firesprite, the studio known for games like Run Sackboy! Run!, The Persistence, and Horizon Call of the Mountain, is currently working on Until Dawn 2. While a firm release date hasn’t been announced, the game is expected to launch on PS5 in 2027.

From the trailer, it looks like the story is set on this creepy, made-up island called Akishima, which apparently has a really dark past and some seriously sad secrets. This time around, we follow a group of ghost hunters who have their own TV show called Dead True. They usually fake their scares for the cameras, but it looks like they’ve stumbled onto something genuinely terrifying and now they actually have to prove they’re brave enough to survive the night. The trailer definitely showed some classic horror stuff – you know, a bit of tension, some scary moments, and yeah, it looks pretty gory! There’s a killer on the loose, and things are about to get intense.
Like the first Until Dawn, the sequel will heavily focus on player choices and their impact on the story. The trailer highlights that every character could either survive or die, a key feature of the genre. Developers at Firesprite explain that your relationships with the characters will significantly affect the plot, leading to unexpected outcomes. They’re committed to maintaining the series’ legacy of impactful choices. Over the next few months, the studio plans to reveal gameplay details, introduce the new cast, and share more about the story. While the cast is mostly new, Peter Stormare will return as Dr. Hill from the original 2015 game.
At the end of the recently released remake of Until Dawn, a hint of a sequel was shown. The clip features Hayden Panettiere’s character, Sam, waking up with an injury and someone calling her name. It’s currently unknown whether this scene points to Until Dawn 2, a different game entirely, or a project that was ultimately cancelled. While Sam wasn’t featured in the trailer for Until Dawn 2, the game is still several months away, so more details are likely to emerge.
The original creators of Until Dawn, Supermassive Games, moved on from the series after releasing the VR spin-off Until Dawn: Rush of Blood in 2016. Since then, they’ve made several other interactive horror games, including the five Dark Pictures Anthology titles and The Quarry, which is often seen as similar to Until Dawn. However, none of these games have resonated with players quite like the first Until Dawn, suggesting why PlayStation decided to revisit the series.
