New Live Service DC Game in the Works from Batman: Arkham Origins Studio

It appears that the creators of the cancelled games, Gotham Knights and Batman: Arkham Origins, are now developing another live-service DC game. Over the past 20 years, the gaming industry has been experimenting with various methods to incorporate multiplayer aspects into their games. While some games remain strictly single-player, many others have some form of online functionality such as co-op, competitive multiplayer, or other interactive features. The live-service genre is currently thriving, allowing games to persist indefinitely, but it has also cultivated a style that isn’t always well-received by fans.

In 2024, DC attempted to break into the live-service genre with “Suicide Squad: Take Down the Justice League,” developed by Rocksteady Studios – known for Batman: Arkham series. However, this game, released after nine years of silence from the studio, fell flat. Despite the game featuring Rocksteady’s renowned storytelling, the overall experience was peculiar. It aimed to blend elements of a looter shooter with an ongoing narrative delivered through seasonal content, which proved to be a strange combination. Unfortunately, “Suicide Squad: Take Down the Justice League” received insufficient support, and many hoped its underperformance would serve as a cautionary tale about forcing live-service aspects into a game without proper planning.

Batman: Arkham Origins, Gotham Knights Team Is Working on Live Service DC Game

It appears that WB Montreal, known for titles like Gotham Knights and Batman: Arkham Origins, is planning to develop another live-service DC game, according to a recent job listing. The details about which DC characters will be featured or the type of game remain unknown at this time. Since the studio specializes in open-world action games, it’s possible that the upcoming project might follow a similar format. The executive producer role involves overseeing the live-service strategy, managing post-launch content releases, and organizing beta tests among other responsibilities.

Amidst calls for a fresh Superman video game, the latest movie has raked in $500 million at the box office and the character’s popularity is soaring. Given this resurgence, it appears that now might be an opportune moment to develop a standalone Superman game. However, it seems unlikely that WB Montreal will take on this task.

Previously this year, the head of DC Studios was inquired about the prospect of a DC version of Marvel Rivals, and he expressed his willingness to consider it. It’s plausible that this upcoming live-service DC game could resemble such a concept, but as of now, WB Montreal hasn’t developed anything similar. However, WB Montreal occasionally assists other WB studios, so they might be collaborating with another team on this new DC project.
