NBC has decided whether to move forward withThe Hunting Party season 3.
Melissa Roxburgh stars in the new crime drama as Bex Henderson, a skilled former FBI profiler. Her expertise is needed when a top-secret prison called the Pit is destroyed, releasing some of the world’s most dangerous killers. While critics initially gave the show very negative reviews (starting with a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, now at 18%), viewers have loved it, giving it an 81% audience score. The first season has become popular on Netflix after becoming available in February.
According to Deadline, NBC has canceled The Hunting Party after two seasons. However, the studio behind the show, Universal Television, is looking for another network or streaming service to pick it up, and Netflix is a potential option. NBC had been waiting to decide whether to renew the series, wanting more data on how well it performed on both traditional TV and streaming platforms.
Since NBCUniversal had already presented its plans for the 2026-2027 season, it was unlikely The Hunting Party would be renewed. The crime drama’s usual Thursday night time slot, from 9 to 10 p.m. Eastern, had already been filled by the 28th season of Law & Order: SVU.
During a recent presentation, Jeff Bader, NBCUniversal’s head of program planning, told Deadline that they’re hoping to improve ratings in a specific time slot. While he said there’s nothing wrong with the current show, Hunting Party, they believe they can find a program that performs better on traditional television.
Despite low ratings on traditional TV, The Hunting Party stayed on the air thanks to its popularity on streaming services. It’s done very well on both Netflix, since February, and Peacock. This success led to talks about moving season 3 exclusively to Peacock instead of NBC, but ultimately the show returned to its original network.
Roxburgh has experienced network cancellations before, and this isn’t the first time a show of hers has been rescued by Netflix. Her previous series, Manifest, was canceled after three seasons, leaving fans with many unanswered questions. However, after becoming incredibly popular on Netflix, the show was revived for a fourth and final, longer season.
Although the show’s creator, Jeff Rake, hadn’t planned for just six seasons, the characters of Manifest, including Michaela Stone (played by Roxburgh), did receive a conclusion, and the majority of the show’s questions were resolved.
Now that The Hunting Party has been canceled – despite doing well on Netflix and being considered by other platforms – it could have a similar comeback story to Manifest. Because the show performed better with streaming viewers than on traditional TV, Netflix might actually be the best place to continue Bex’s story.
Alongside Roxburgh, the cast of The Hunting Party featured Patrick Sabongui, Josh McKenzie, Sara Garcia, Nick Wechsler, Zabryna Guevara, Kari Matchett, Matt Frewer, and Siobhan Williams. JJ Bailey created the series.
