Rebus season 2 gets major update from BBC as former Coronation Street and Taggart star joins the cast

The popular BBC series based on Ian Rankin’s crime novels is returning for a second season, with John Rebus once again leading the investigations.

Production is underway in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and several new actors will join Richard Rankin, known from Outlander, to play the detective in his younger years.

I’m so excited to see John Michie joining the cast! I’ve always been a fan – from his work in shows like Taggart, Coronation Street, and Holby City, right up to his recent appearances in Karen Pirie and Ridley. He’s a fantastic actor and I can’t wait to see what he brings to this new project.

The cast also includes Stephen McCole (known for Shetland and Vigil), Emily Barber (The Wayfinders, Mobland), Lorne MacFadyen (Starstruck, Operation Mincemeat), Conor Berry (Vigil, Karen Pirie), Ivan Ivashkin (The Capture, Bloods), Olga Safronova (The Fatigued, Second Spring), Douglas Russell (Adolescence, Department Q), Alexis Rodney (Death in Paradise, Mix Tape), Reece Montague (The Primrose Railway Children), and Joshua Haynes (Crime, Granite Harbour).

The new series will feature returning actors like Brian Ferguson as Rebus’s brother Michael, Neshla Caplan as Michael’s wife Chrissie, Amy Manson as Rebus’s former wife Rhona, and Stuart Bowman as his long-time rival, Ger Cafferty.

The second season, again written by Gregory Burke, will further delve into Rebus’s complicated life, following him as he investigates crime in Scotland and deals with his own personal struggles. It will also look at the connections between dangerous criminals and the powerful, wealthy world of law and finance – areas where the police are often hesitant to investigate.

At the end of season 1, Rebus got his family back, but not in the way he had hoped.

Rhona’s partner, Lockie, was killed by a gunman wearing a mask. The shooting happened instantly as Lockie answered the door.

Before the assault, the fund manager – himself no stranger to questionable behavior – had warned he’d seize all of Darryl’s money, as Darryl owed money to another criminal, Lockie.

Understandably, Darryl didn’t react well to the threat, and soon after, Rhona’s husband was killed.

Michael Rebus decided to go into hiding. He’d originally intended to turn himself in after getting into trouble, but Chrissie convinced him to take the money he’d stolen from Cafferty and escape instead.

Michael killed the nephew of Billy Cochrane, a gangster with ties to the Ulster Defence Association. This act will likely lead to retaliation, putting Michael’s friends and family at risk.

As a huge fan of the Rebus novels, I’m thrilled to hear they’re revisiting that world! Ian Rankin mentioned how lucky they were with the cast and crew for the first series, and he’s really excited to be working with so many of the same people again. It sounds like they’re building something special, and as a devotee, that’s fantastic to hear.

I’m so thrilled about the new cast members joining us this season! They’re already injecting so much fresh energy, innovative ideas, and real depth into the story – it’s incredibly exciting to watch!

The actor described his character as incredibly complex, noting he’s a very motivated person with significant flaws, and is always striving to overcome internal struggles. He feels there’s still a lot to learn about the character and many hidden depths to uncover with future explorations.

As a huge fan, I’m so excited about what’s coming next for this character. It seems like he’s about to face some really tough challenges, and I can’t wait to see how the actor brings that to the screen. It’s going to be amazing!

The series will also see the return of Lucie Shorthouse as DC Siobhan Clarke, Noof Ousellam as Darryl Christie, Thoren Ferguson as Malcolm Fox, Mia McKenzie as Sammy Rebus, Andrew John Tait as Neil MacKenzie, and Cassidy Little as Cammy.

Season 2 will debut in 2027.

Rebus airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
