It looks like the new Tomb Raider game, Legacy of Atlantis, used artificial intelligence during its development, and some people aren’t happy about it.
The classic Lara Croft adventure is being reimagined by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, and is scheduled to launch in February of next year.
Following an update to the game’s Steam page, a notice regarding the use of AI has been found. It states:
We used AI tools to help with initial ideas and create some early versions of content during development. However, all AI-generated elements were either swapped out or improved by our artists and designers to ensure the final product matched our creative goals.
The statement doesn’t offer specifics, but confirms that AI tools were used during the initial development process. However, anything created with AI will be either replaced or improved upon, meaning the final game will likely contain very little AI-generated content.
Generative AI, especially when used for creative work, is often debated, and I anticipate ‘Legacy of Atlantis’ will likely face criticism because of it.
AI is already a common part of game development, helping with many different jobs. Plus, lots of game studios are currently testing out how generative AI can be used, with results ranging from promising to mixed.
We’ll likely see AI tools used more and more in game development for the foreseeable future. Whether or not that’s a good thing is up to you, though.
