David Jaffe is not a fan of new PS5 game God of War Laufey.
The experienced game director, known for creating the first game on the PlayStation 2, seemed upset during the 20-minute showcase of the new title. Afterwards, he didn’t shy away from criticizing it, even saying it wasn’t as good as Square Enix’s game, Forspoken.
(A game I, for the record, thought was fun.)
He wondered what it was, then admitted, “It doesn’t look very good. It actually reminds me of the game Forspoken.”
Jaffe commented that he found the new title uncreative and boring, but I disagree – especially considering it’s about what happens to gods after they die. Still, everyone’s entitled to their opinion.
He expanded:
“It’s dead. That game is not going to do well for what they expect it to do. This just feels like Cory [Barlog] or somebody wanted to write a fantasy story. You’ve lost the gore and the violence that made the first game. You’ve lost the character. You already lost him after 2018 because he changed so much he wasn’t the same character anymore. And you’ve lost me with the cube and the little Disney character at the beginning. This just seems like a fantasy.”
The ex-Santa Monica Studio staff member stated he doesn’t think the game would have been successful without the established ‘God of War’ name.
These opinions are similar to his previous statements about the God of War spin-off, Sons of Sparta, which he had criticized as a poor exclusive game for the PlayStation earlier this year.
Despite some frustrating commentary, it seems Jaffe simply dislikes where he sees the franchise he started heading – it’s clearly aiming for a wider appeal now.
Laufey definitely feels different from previous games in the series. Some believe Santa Monica Studio might have been directed by their higher-ups to try something new with the God of War world, and I don’t see that as a negative.
I enjoyed the original God of War games, and it’s cool they’re being remade. However, I’m open to seeing new stories told in that same world – in fact, I find the idea of a story centered around Laufey particularly interesting.
Jaffe seems genuine in what he’s saying, but he likely understands that harsh criticism attracts attention, similar to his take on Sons of Sparta. I admit I’m contributing to this cycle by writing about it – I’m part of the problem, too.
Ultimately, I disagree with his perspective, and it seems like most people feel the same way – he appears to be quite isolated in this opinion.
As a huge God of War fan, I always listen when the original creator speaks about the series. But honestly, I think he needs to realize how much the games have evolved over the last 20 years. It’s a different beast now than what he first made, and that’s okay!
