Eli Roth first gained attention with his 2002 film, Cabin Fever, and has since become known for horror movies that deliberately shock and disturb audiences with graphic violence. His Hostel films essentially created a new, intensely violent subgenre, and The Green Inferno was reminiscent of the most controversial exploitation films from the 1970s. Even his 2023 slasher film, Thanksgiving, was notably gory, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in extreme horror. After a failed attempt at adapting the Borderlands video game, Roth is back with Ice Cream Man, an original horror film he’s been developing for twenty years and claims is his most frightening work yet.
The trailer centers on Ari Millen as the ice cream man, a cheerful figure who brings happiness to kids in the neighborhood. But the ice cream has a disturbing effect: it drives the children to commit terrible acts. The brief preview clearly shows that director Eli Roth hasn’t held back on the gore, taking full advantage of the movie’s unrated status. Expect extremely graphic scenes, including people chopping off limbs, stitching heads back on, and even scooping brains out while someone is still alive.
Despite the Title, Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man Is an Original Story
Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man is a completely new story, even though the title might remind you of other horror projects. The most well-known is a 1995 direct-to-video horror comedy directed by Norman Apstein, starring Clint Howard as Gregory Tudor. Tudor was deeply traumatized as a child when he saw an ice cream vendor get shot, and he later reopens the business, secretly using human remains in his ice cream and terrorizing the neighborhood kids, who ultimately team up to stop him. Ice Cream Man is also the name of a popular ongoing horror comic book series from Image Comics, created by W. Maxwell Prince and Martín Morazzo. This series centers around a supernatural being named Rick, who frequently disguises himself as an ice cream vendor.

The upcoming film Ice Cream Man isn’t based on the movie or the comics of the same name. It’s a completely new story, co-written by director Eli Roth and Noah Belson, about a peaceful neighborhood that falls apart after a mysterious stranger arrives. Roth has said he’s had this idea for years, but studios initially rejected his early versions. He now believes he can finally create his most frightening and shocking film yet, and early production suggests he’s on track to do just that.
Roth started The Horror Section label because he was tired of studios rejecting his script. Essentially, when traditional film companies thought his idea was too intense, he created his own company to get the movie made and shown in theaters. Ice Cream Man will now be released unrated in over 2,000 theaters across North America.
The Ice Cream Man is scheduled to hit theaters on August 7, 2026.
