Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Director Says Multiplatform Releases Has Changed Development Process

Many fans hoped to see the first details of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 at Sony’s recent State of Play event, but director Naoki Hamaguchi has stated the team isn’t quite ready to share specifics. In an interview with Famitsu, he did mention that development is moving forward and that they’re aiming for a simultaneous release on all platforms – PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

We don’t have a firm release date to share yet,” Hamaguchi explained. “But during development, we’ve really focused on making sure players can enjoy the game around the same time on all platforms. We’re carefully planning how to bring the third game to multiple platforms, taking both our fans and the business side of things into account.

Hamaguchi explained that Square Enix’s current approach to releasing games on multiple platforms has significantly altered how their development teams work. Previously, they’d build a game for one platform and then adapt it for others. Now, because of the wide range of hardware capabilities across different platforms, teams need to design games from the start with multiple platforms in mind to ensure they run well everywhere.

“To be honest, the development flow itself has changed considerably,” he explained. “Previously, the general approach was to ‘complete the game on one platform first, and then consider porting it later.’ Square Enix also largely followed this approach. However, what I strongly felt through FFVII Remake and FFVII Rebirth is that in this day and age, that way of thinking is no longer viable. Including rendering, streaming, memory design, and asset configuration, it is necessary to ‘design with multiple environments in mind from the beginning.’ In other words, the era of ‘the porting team working hard later’ is over.”

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will be available on all gaming systems. However, they haven’t promised it will be released on the same day for every platform, including consoles and PC. Despite this, the development team’s new methods give Hamaguchi confidence that a simultaneous launch is achievable.

These days, how much passion goes into making a game is more important than what systems it’s on. We feel the same way about our trilogy. The old idea that big-budget games are limited to certain platforms is quickly becoming outdated. That’s why we’re committed to finishing the third game properly. We want to be able to say we’ve completed the Final Fantasy VII Remake series fully and proudly, and that’s what drives us as we continue development. Stay tuned!
