The Biggest Announcements At Sony’s SGF State Of Play

Sony holds several State of Play presentations throughout the year, but the summer one is always the most anticipated. It typically happens around the same time as Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest and is when we usually see announcements for the biggest upcoming games. This year, Sony generated even more excitement by announcing the show two weeks in advance.

The recent State of Play presentation heavily featured Insomniac’s upcoming game, Marvel’s Wolverine, which is set to launch in September. But the show wasn’t just about one game; it lasted for over an hour and showcased several major titles, primarily focusing on releases planned for this summer and fall.

After a long wait, Insomniac Games released an extended trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine. The trailer shows Wolverine pursuing the Reavers, a group of technologically enhanced criminals who are kidnapping vulnerable mutants. Like the first gameplay footage, it highlights the game’s intense combat, as well as Wolverine’s powerful rage and ability to heal quickly.

The trailer held an even bigger surprise: Jean Grey teams up with Wolverine, assisting him in battles. Later gameplay shows Wolverine traveling the world, changing his classic outfits and facing off against the X-Men’s most formidable foes.

Man, it feels like ages since we’ve seen anything new with Rayman! But finally, Ubisoft just announced that Rayman Legends Retold is dropping on October 1st. It’s basically a full remake of the very first Rayman game, which is awesome. I’m super excited to jump back into the world and experience it all over again!

Beyond simply being a game, Legends Retold is expanding with new story elements, more music, and a brand-new realm called Kung Foot. Players will also be able to enjoy the game together, as it will support four-player local co-op, letting up to three friends join in on the fun.

At the recent State of Play event, a new game called Kemuri was revealed. It’s the debut title from developer Unseen. Kemuri is set in Kemuri City, where Yokai Hunters battle supernatural creatures called yokai. Players become hunters by making contracts with and capturing yokai, then using those captured yokai’s powers to fight and defend the city from a wide range of paranormal threats.

Kemuri stands out visually, offering a unique style. Players can customize their characters by equipping powers from yokai, which appear as special “Possession Apparel.” The game can be played alone or with up to three friends, and is currently slated for release in 2027, though a specific date hasn’t been announced yet.

As a huge Tomb Raider fan, I was so hyped at The Game Awards this year when they announced a remake of the very first game! It’s called Legacy of Atlantis, and it takes you back to all the classic locations, but with a seriously updated look and how it plays. They’ve really stayed true to the original, but they’ve also expanded the levels a lot, so there’s way more to explore than ever before.

This remake seems like a perfect way to experience the first Lara Croft adventure again, and the trailer shown during State of Play really highlighted Lara’s personality as a skilled explorer. Unfortunately, the gameplay trailer was delayed. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will now be released on February 12, 2027.

Capcom is continuing its recent streak of successful games with Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Following hits like Resident Evil 9 and Pragmata in 2026, they’re now bringing back the Onimusha series. The newest trailer shows Miyamoto Musashi searching for the power of the Oni to defend Kyoto from terrifying monsters.

Fans have seen bits and pieces of Onimusha before, but Capcom has now revealed the release date for the newest game. Way of the Sword comes out on September 25th for consoles and PC, so the wait isn’t long! And for those who can’t wait at all, a demo is available to play right now, letting you experience the beginning of the game.

During the show, Annapurna Interactive and Great Ape Games revealed the first look at their new game, The Lost Wild. It’s a survival horror experience reminiscent of Jurassic Park, where the main goal is to avoid being spotted by dinosaurs. While the game looks stunning, the developers emphasized that combat isn’t a focus – players will need to rely on stealth and evasion rather than fighting the creatures.

In The Lost Wild, you’ll primarily need to avoid the dinosaurs rather than fight them. You can’t damage them with attacks, as they don’t have weak spots or predictable patterns. Instead, the game focuses on distracting and evading these creatures. Your main objective is to uncover the mystery of the island by finding and interpreting clues scattered throughout the environment.

Saber Interactive’s Stuntman Hollywood was a standout surprise at the show. It’s a fresh game that blends fast-paced arcade racing with the creativity of designing incredible stunts, making it truly unique – and a welcome change from recent releases.

The game lets players recreate famous stunts from popular movies and TV shows. You’ll find content inspired by both recent films like Fast & Furious and classic series like Miami Vice, featuring many of the iconic vehicles from those franchises. Levels are organized by movie or show, and then further broken down into episodes, letting players build the ultimate stunt sequences for each scene.

Firesprite Games unveiled Until Dawn 2, a sequel to the beloved original horror game. The first Until Dawn was a hit with players, offering a thrilling, interactive story where choices mattered. Until Dawn 2 promises the same experience, but with a brand new group of characters facing the danger.

The upcoming game, Until Dawn 2, centers around a group of paranormal investigators who run a popular social media channel called “Dead True.” Despite claiming to investigate the supernatural, they’ve never actually encountered anything… until a trip to a tropical island for a new episode. Now, they’re facing real danger and players must help them survive. The developers are promising that any character can live or die, so quick thinking is essential! Until Dawn 2 is currently scheduled for release in 2027.

The God of War series is incredibly popular, so it’s natural a new game is in development. What many didn’t anticipate is that the next installment won’t feature Kratos as the main character. Instead, players will experience the story through the eyes of Kratos’ wife, Faye, following her passing by Kratos and their son, Atreus.

Okay, so everyone knew a new God of War was coming, but I still couldn’t believe how long Sony spent showing off God of War: Laufey at the State of Play! It looks incredible. Apparently, Kratos (or Faye, I guess, since that’s the title!) ends up in this wild afterlife called the Everywhen, and it’s basically a huge war between gods from different cultures. He’s pulled into it when he finds out his family might be in danger, so naturally, he has to fight. Seriously, even without a release date yet, this is already the game I’m most hyped for from Sony. I can’t wait!
