Original God of War Creator Weighs in on the New Game (& He’s Not Impressed)

Okay, so the big news from the PlayStation State of Play on June 2nd was definitely the new God of War trailer! It’s called God of War Laufey, and it’s a total surprise – you don’t play as Kratos this time, but as his wife! They haven’t announced when it’s coming out yet, but the trailer was pretty long and gave us a good look at the story and where they’re going with it. I even watched the original God of War creator, David Jaffe, react to it live, and his first reaction was literally an eye roll! It was pretty funny, honestly.

So, everyone knows I created the original God of War, but I haven’t actually worked on a new one in years. And honestly, I’ve been pretty vocal about not loving where the series has gone lately. So when I saw the God of War Laufey trailer, I wasn’t exactly blown away. I’ll be straight with you, it just looked…uninspired. It felt really dull, and I’m worried this new game isn’t going to do very well. Just my honest opinion!

David Jaffe Calls New God of War “Uninspired” & Predicts It Will Underperform

David Jaffe, a key figure in the early God of War games (including God of War 2), has expressed his disappointment with the direction the franchise has taken. He feels the newer games don’t capture the original feel or Kratos’s character. Despite his criticism, these recent God of War titles have been commercially successful and critically acclaimed, even winning Game of the Year awards. Jaffe has now voiced similar dissatisfaction with the latest installment.

David Jaffe shared his immediate reactions to the recent State of Play presentation, focusing on the new God of War game. After watching the 20-minute trailer, Jaffe didn’t hold back, expressing that the game feels like a separate project simply branded with the God of War name. He described it as uninspired and predicted it won’t meet PlayStation’s sales expectations. You can see his full reaction in the livestream video below, starting around the 1:37 mark when he begins discussing the Laufey trailer.

He believes the game doesn’t feel like a genuine God of War title, but rather a standard fantasy game. He specifically misses the intense gore and violence of the original, and feels Kratos isn’t prominent enough. In his opinion, the game wouldn’t be remarkable without the God of War name, as other games showcased in the State of Play presentation seemed more engaging and enjoyable.

The original creator of God of War wasn’t a fan of the first trailer for the new game, stating bluntly that he “didn’t like it at all.” However, he appears to be an outlier, as many fans have been impressed by what they’ve seen. While the cube has confused some, many are excited about the combat shown and eager to learn more about Faye’s story. It’s understandable that not everyone is thrilled about a God of War game that doesn’t focus on Kratos.

It will likely be a while before we see more of God of War Laufey. The game is still early in development, and there’s no announced release date. While the recent trailer offered a good look at the game, don’t expect another one, or a release date, anytime soon. We’ll have to wait until the game is released and sales figures are available to know if previous predictions about it were accurate.

What are your thoughts on the new God of War trailer? Does it seem too similar to typical fantasy stories, just with the God of War name attached, as Jaffe suggested?
