While “The Mandalorian & Grogu” didn’t achieve blockbuster success at the box office, a future for these popular Star Wars characters – and even a sequel – isn’t out of the question. The film arrived seven years after “The Rise of Skywalker” concluded the Skywalker Saga (and sparked debate among fans), and five years after “The Mandalorian” was at its most popular. Despite this, it received mixed reviews and struggled to attract audiences, experiencing a significant 69% drop in ticket sales during its second weekend – a record low for the Star Wars franchise.
Getting people to go to theaters to see characters they usually watch at home is a challenge, and the latest Star Wars movie has earned less than $250 million so far. This puts it on track to be the lowest-grossing Star Wars film ever – currently a record held by Solo with $393 million. This has sparked discussions about the future of Star Wars in theaters, and raised questions about whether we’ll see The Mandalorian & Grogu 2 or a fourth season of The Mandalorian. However, Brendan Wayne, one of the actors who played the Mandalorian in the movie, recently shared that these characters will continue, according to ScreenRant.
I believe there’s room for more stories like ours, and the audience seems to agree. While I’m not sure where we’ll continue – whether it’s television or a movie – I’m leaning towards a film and I’m excited about the future.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Deserve A Star Wars Future

While Wayne’s statements don’t guarantee another Mandalorian project is in the works for theaters or Disney+, he seems optimistic, and it wouldn’t be shocking if one happened despite the movie’s disappointing box office numbers. Disney will consider more than just ticket sales when evaluating The Mandalorian & Grogu‘s success. Since the film could have been released as another season on Disney+, the box office revenue is almost like extra credit. Considering Disney+ views and merchandise sales, they’ll likely be pleased with the overall performance.
I’m really glad to see people are enjoying this movie! It seems like those who’ve seen it genuinely love it – it has a fantastic CinemaScore and an amazing audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, even higher than what critics gave it. And honestly, that makes perfect sense to me. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, but it is a blast to watch – a really fun, exciting ride that just puts a smile on your face. It’s easy to get lost in the experience and just have a good time.
The heart of the show lies in the relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu, and their story has plenty of potential for continuation. There’s still much to discover about their connection, particularly as Grogu grows and his abilities develop. Seeing them travel the galaxy and fight villains is consistently enjoyable. As a fan, I’m eager for more – whether that comes in the form of another movie or another season of the show will likely depend on how well it performs on Disney+.
Typically, a movie that doesn’t perform well in theaters wouldn’t get a sequel. However, Disney might decide to make another one anyway, seeing it as an easy win if they were already planning to invest a similar amount of money into another season. The decision could also hinge on what Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni envision for the story, as it might be better suited for television. It’s rare for a show to move from streaming to theaters and then back to TV, though.
The future of Star Wars is still under development. Currently, only one movie—Starfighter in 2027—and one live-action series, the second season of Ahsoka (also in 2027), are confirmed. As Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan are new to their roles as co-presidents of Lucasfilm, we can expect more details to emerge in the coming months, and it’s likely that The Mandalorian and Grogu will play a role in whatever comes next.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently playing in theaters.
