Netflix’s Biggest Show Right Now Is a Global Streaming Hit, But the Biggest Market Is Ignoring It

Netflix has achieved something every major movie studio desires: a successful franchise. Just like Disney acquiring Marvel and Lucasfilm, or Warner Bros. with New Line Cinema, Netflix now has its own valuable, original content. Few expected shows like Stranger Things and Squid Game to become massive hits, spawning spin-offs, stage adaptations, video games, and tons of merchandise. While those shows are well-known, Netflix has another potential franchise quietly developing, though it isn’t currently making waves on the U.S. charts.

Netflix’s current Top 10 in the U.S. features the latest season of The Four Seasons, along with new series Nemesis and The Boroughs, and a special honoring Eddie Murphy. Surprisingly, despite its popularity worldwide, the #1 non-English language show, Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine, isn’t on the list at all. This is particularly notable because it’s a spin-off from the hugely successful show Money Heist, and its second season, yet it hasn’t resonated with American audiences. The numbers show Berlin is a hit globally, but not in the United States.

Berlin Proves Netflix’s Money Heist Is a Global Hit

According to data from FlixPatrol, the new Netflix series Berlin (a spin-off of Money Heist) was the most popular show on the platform for several days. It recently dropped to second place, narrowly beaten by the latest season of The Four Seasons. What’s remarkable is that Berlin has reached #1 in 28 countries in South America, Africa, and the Middle East, but hasn’t made it into the Top 10 in the United States at all.

Netflix reports that Berlin and The Lady with an Ermine attracted 6.2 million viewers in its first week, jumping to 10.3 million in week two, before dropping to 4.7 million in week three. In less than a month, the series reached a total of 21.2 million views. During the same period, The Boroughs and Nemesis also performed well in the US, with viewership numbers similar to those of Berlin‘s later episodes.

As a huge Netflix watcher, I’ve been wondering why Money Heist isn’t getting the same massive push as some other shows. It’s weird, because after Netflix picked up the series, the three seasons they made were absolutely huge hits globally. Right now, Money Heist: Part 4 is actually the highest-rated of the bunch, and it’s still one of the top four non-English language TV shows ever on Netflix! I think part of the problem is that big franchises just haven’t been doing so well lately, whether they’re huge blockbusters or smaller properties.

A common complaint since Marvel started making shows for Disney+ is that you need to watch everything else they’ve made just to follow the new stories. While this isn’t usually true, many people now believe it is.

While American viewers were initially captivated by the final season of Money Heist, interest has waned since then. After the original series wrapped up its story, Netflix faced the challenge of continuing the franchise. They’ve released a Korean spin-off and a prequel focused on the character Berlin, both of which have been successful internationally. However, it seems US audiences haven’t stuck around. Fortunately for Netflix, the shows are performing well in other countries, demonstrating that a popular series can thrive on the platform even if it’s ignored by its largest US subscriber base.
