A new preview for Marvel’s X-Men ’97 hints at a major team of X-Men villains appearing in Season 2. The recent trailer showcased the show’s large scope, with more mutants – and even some non-mutant characters – joining the story. While the X-Men are spread throughout time and space, other mutant groups are trying to protect people. However, new dangers are emerging, including a fight between Nightcrawler and the powerful mutant Exodus, who has connections to Magneto in the comics.
A new comic book, X-Men ’97 Season 2 #1, serves as a bridge between the first and second seasons of the animated series. Written by Steve Foxe and illustrated by Salva Espin, it shows what’s happening in the X-Men’s world during the 1990s while the team is inactive. Think of it as setting the stage for the events to come. The comic also reveals that the character Exodus is building a new team called the Acolytes, potentially establishing them as major villains for the X-Men.
Who Are the Acolytes, Magneto’s Most Dangerous Supervillain Team?

As a huge X-Men fan, I was really disturbed by the Acolytes when they showed up in the ’90s – they were basically a much darker take on the Brotherhood. We saw the first group in Season 1 of X-Men ’97, but this second version, led by Exodus, is seriously frightening. They took Magneto’s idea of mutant dominance and twisted it into something truly horrific, actively targeting and attacking regular humans – what they call ‘flatscan.’ There’s this one scene that still haunts me: they attack a school bus thinking a new mutant is on board, only to realize the kid has a disability, and they just…try to kill all the children. It’s chilling. They’re essentially Magneto’s followers who’ve taken his beliefs and pushed them to the absolute worst, most evil limits you can imagine.
The followers of Magneto are extremely devoted, viewing him as a savior and Exodus – a powerful mutant with telepathic and telekinetic abilities – as his messenger. The trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2 revealed that Exodus will be a key character, creating a conflict of faith with Nightcrawler. While both characters share a Catholic background, Nightcrawler remains loyal to the X-Men instead of Magneto. Exodus is expected to be a central figure in Season 2, potentially becoming one of the show’s most important mutants.
The new X-Men ’97 series is cleverly mirroring classic storylines from the comics. Just like in the original source material, after Magneto was presumed dead, Exodus took charge of a group called the Acolytes. Later, he ended up looking after Magneto when Professor X erased his memories. The show recently revisited a similar event, even including the dramatic scene of Magneto ripping adamantium from Wolverine. Now that Magneto is missing and thought to be dead again, it sets the stage perfectly for Exodus to step into a leadership role.
