Marvel’s comic books aren’t created by just one person. The long-lasting popularity of its heroes requires the contributions of many talented individuals. Each comic involves a team – writers, artists, colorists, letterers, editors, and many others – all adding their unique skills. This is particularly true for iconic characters like Spider-Man, who has been a major success for Marvel since he first appeared. Because of his importance, countless people – potentially thousands – have contributed to Spider-Man’s stories and development over the years.
Spider-Man has inspired countless story ideas over the years, some small and others huge. A few of these ideas have been so powerful that they continue to shape the comics even today. We’re going to explore seven of the most important creative choices that changed Spider-Man’s path. These decisions – from famous storylines to introducing new characters – have made Spider-Man the hero he is, for better or worse. Let’s dive in and look at how Spidey was created and evolved!
7) Return of Norman Osborn

Norman Osborn, better known as the Green Goblin, is considered one of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes. After seemingly dying in Amazing Spider-Man #122, he was absent from the comics for over two decades. His return during the “Clone Saga” marked a turning point, solidifying his place as Spider-Man’s ultimate enemy. Since then, Norman has been a constant, looming threat in Spider-Man’s life, causing him more pain than any other villain and even challenging the entire superhero world. Surprisingly, the Green Goblin has even become an ally at times. None of this would have been possible without bringing Norman Osborn back into the story.
6) Introducing Magical Elements

For years, Spider-Man’s powers were explained by science within the comic books. However, in the early 2000s, Marvel added a mystical element, connecting him to a powerful force called the Web of Life and Destiny. This change unlocked new abilities like naturally produced webbing and more primal instincts, and introduced villains like Morlun, who feeds on totems. This development ultimately paved the way for the Spider-Verse, a hugely popular expansion of Spider-Man’s story. The Spider-Verse has revolutionized how Marvel handles large-scale Spider-Man events and has allowed for the creation of amazing characters who wouldn’t exist without it—not to mention the successful Spider-Verse films.
5) Debut of Miles Morales

The animated Spider-Man films are fantastic, and at their heart is Miles Morales. Before Miles, it was hard to imagine anyone but Peter Parker as Spider-Man – other versions existed only in different universes. Miles showed us that Spider-Man isn’t about one person, but a symbol of heroism within Marvel. His take on the character has breathed new life into the franchise while staying true to the Spider-Man we all know and love. Miles allows Marvel to tell fresh stories and revisit classic Spider-Man themes from a unique angle, which is always exciting.
4) Ultimate Universe Reimagining

Unlike DC Comics, Marvel generally avoids completely restarting its universe. Instead, its characters have continuously existed since the 1960s, with the timeline subtly shifting to address aging. This means we rarely see fresh takes on their origins. However, the original Ultimate Universe changed that. Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) offered a modern reimagining of Spider-Man’s beginnings, giving us a new perspective on Peter Parker. This series had a huge impact on the character, rekindling fans’ interest and solidifying the idea of Peter Parker as a high school student in the public’s mind. Its innovative storytelling continues to influence every new Spider-Man adaptation today.
3) Death of Gwen Stacy

Gwen Stacy was once the central love of Peter Parker’s life, and their relationship was a major part of his comic book stories for years. However, everything changed when the Green Goblin killed her. This event was Spider-Man’s most devastating moment, impacting him deeply. Gwen’s death signaled a shift in the comics, moving away from simple, cheerful stories toward more complex and emotionally challenging ones. It’s often seen as the end of the Silver Age of comics and the beginning of a darker era. Even today, Gwen’s memory continues to affect Peter’s life and choices. She represents his biggest regret, and her death weighs heavily on him despite his successes and relationships. Notably, her death led to the downfall of the Green Goblin and ultimately brought Peter and Mary Jane Watson together.
2) Marriage to Mary Jane

Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson are considered the most iconic couple in comics. Their relationship was often rocky, but they always cared deeply for each other and helped each other become better people. When they got married, it marked a turning point for Peter, bringing a new level of maturity to his stories. Their connection allowed both characters to evolve and become more complete, offering them both stability and support. Even though their marriage was later undone in the comics, fans still passionately hope to see them reunited, proving how much they love Peter and MJ together.
1) “One More Day”

Spider-Man and Mary Jane’s marriage is iconic, and their subsequent separation has profoundly shaped his comic book storylines. While the storyline ‘One More Day’ is widely considered the most disliked Spider-Man comic, it continues to be a driving force in his narratives. Marvel keeps Peter Parker isolated, adhering to the separation established in ‘One More Day,’ yet they also respond to fan desire for a reunion. Despite its unpopularity, ‘One More Day’ remains incredibly influential, responsible for nearly every significant change in Spider-Man’s status quo over the last two decades – and some of those changes have actually been positive. Even though it’s considered his worst story, ‘One More Day’ continues to have a huge impact on Spider-Man.
