Euphoria showrunner reveals why [Spoiler] had to die – and why another key character appeared much less in season 3

**Spoiler warning for the series finale of Euphoria**

Sam Levinson, the creator of the popular HBO series Euphoria, has discussed the show’s shocking finale, specifically explaining the choice to eliminate certain main characters.

The show ended last weekend with the main character, Rue Bennett (played by Zendaya), dying from a fentanyl overdose. She was intentionally poisoned by a drug kingpin named Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje).

The character’s death has sparked a lot of debate among fans, but the creator has defended his decision, stating it was intentional.

In an interview with The New York Times’ Popcast, Levinson explained that addiction can fluctuate – sometimes it completely consumes a person’s life, and other times it feels more manageable, like just occasional substance use. However, he emphasized that the underlying tendency towards addiction is always present, even when it doesn’t seem like a major problem.

She ended up injured, with a cut on her hand. I’ve always seen that as a physical manifestation of her inner emotional pain. It’s like she thinks, “Just one won’t hurt,” and I believe it was the fentanyl she brought into the country at the start of the season that led to this.

The audience then saw Rue’s sponsor, Ali Muhammed (Colman Domingo), violently retaliate against those who harmed her, all while grieving her loss and questioning his purpose.

The series ended on a prayer from Ali and a vision of the late Rue, seemingly at peace.

Levinson has also explained that the show’s ending served as a memorial to Angus Cloud, the actor who played Fezco and tragically passed away from an overdose before season three was filmed.

The writer also explained why certain characters had smaller parts in the third season, after having been key players in earlier seasons.

Besides the difficulties of coordinating everyone’s busy schedules, Levinson also explained why Nate Jacobs (played by Jacob Elordi) had a less prominent part in the season.

Nate’s actions drive the main storyline for Cassie this season. Instead of focusing on his personal problems each week, his role is to set things in motion for the larger story arc.

So, ultimately, Nate’s journey in season 3 was to serve Cassie’s storyline.

After the final episode aired, HBO announced that the show has been cancelled and won’t be back for another season, marking the last time we’ll see these characters.

Euphoria seasons 1 to 3 are available on HBO Max, Sky Atlantic and NOW.
