Mayim Bialik Says GLP-1 Medication Gave Her “Explosive Diarrhea”

Mayim Bialik is opening up about her experience with GLP-1s.

An actress from The Big Bang Theory shared her experience with unpleasant side effects after receiving weight loss injections.

Mayim Bialik shared in an essay for The Free Press, published June 5th and titled “My GLP-1 Nightmare,” that after being advised to try a low dose of a synthetic GLP-1 medication, she suffered unpleasant side effects. These included severe diarrhea, intensely foul-smelling burps that made her self-conscious, and sneezing fits whenever she attempted to eat or drink – a reaction she learned is called “snatiation.”

She described feeling intensely uncomfortable with painful cramps, a swollen stomach, and widespread body aches, like having the flu. She also couldn’t keep any fluids down, experiencing severe diarrhea so frequently that she didn’t always make it to the bathroom – this happened more than three times.

As Mayim put it, “To say I had an adverse reaction would be somewhat of an understatement.”

Concerned about side effects from the weight loss drug, the 50-year-old woman consulted a gastroenterologist. The doctor told her that her symptoms, though strong, weren’t uncommon.

She remembered him explaining that these drugs significantly impact the body and should only be used for severe obesity and related health problems. She didn’t believe her situation qualified as severe enough to warrant their use.

The doctor also thought that other medicines Mayim was taking could have played a role in how she was feeling.

Mayim, a mother to 18-year-old Miles and 15-year-old Frederick with her ex-husband Michael Stone, started taking a weight loss medication because a doctor suggested it could alleviate long-term health issues she’s faced since adulthood.

The actress from Blossom was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, a thyroid condition caused by the immune system, when she was 23 years old. She has said that she was given medication at the time, but didn’t change her diet or lifestyle, and now believes this may have gradually worsened her condition.

Mayim later found out she had several conditions, including connective tissue disease, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), Sjögren’s syndrome, and dysautonomia.

She said that over the past few months, three different doctors recommended she try a GLP-1 medication. They didn’t suggest it for weight loss, even though she’d gained about twenty pounds after menopause, but because research indicates these drugs may help lower inflammation throughout the body, which can be beneficial for autoimmune diseases.

Although a GLP-1 medication wasn’t the life-changing solution Mayim had anticipated, she emphasized that her personal experience doesn’t diminish the positive results others have achieved with it.

She stated that GLP-1 medications have been truly beneficial for those who really needed them, and she’s confident of that. However, she noted that there’s very little discussion about the potential negative side effects or problems that can occur.

Even after losing seventy pounds with medication, Jonathan continued to champion body positivity.

Honestly, I’m completely obsessed with the idea of body neutrality! It’s like, your body doesn’t have to look a certain way for you to be worthy of love or happiness. It doesn’t matter what your body looks like – you deserve to be celebrated and loved just as you are, period. It’s so freeing to think about it that way!

Later, though, the musician admitted she gave some injectibles a shot.

Lizzo explained to Trisha Paytas on the Just Trish podcast in June 2025 why she stopped taking GLP-1 medications sooner than expected. It’s brave of her to be so open about it, and I really feel for her. It just goes to show that these things aren’t always a quick fix, even with medical help.

She explained that a certain treatment didn’t reduce her hunger at all. While some people lose their appetite, she continued to eat appetizers, a full meal, and even dessert. She admitted feeling down when she saw it working for others but not for herself, leading her to question what was different about her and why she wasn’t experiencing the same results. She shared these feelings in June 2024.

She remembered returning from vacation and immediately using the medication. A few days later, she met a friend for lunch who confessed to feeling sick because she was taking Ozempic. The woman realized she was also feeling nauseous, but she attributed it to jet lag from her trip to Spain.
