Vintage Star Wars toys continue to be some of the most valuable items at auction. This month, a highly sought-after prototype of the 1979 Kenner rocket-firing Boba Fett figure – known for its rare J-slot mechanism – sold for $130,000 (or $158,600 with the buyer’s premium). However, this price is surprisingly low, as a comparable figure sold for over $1.3 million just under two years ago. The reason for this drop? Many experts believe it’s due to the recent popularity of the franchise on Netflix.
The original Boba Fett action figure by Kenner was intended as a special offer sent through the mail. It featured the popular bounty hunter and a spring-loaded missile launcher on his backpack. Unfortunately, after creating about 100 test versions – including 30 with a unique back slot – the toy was considered too dangerous for kids, and the release was cancelled. Later versions of the Boba Fett figure had missiles that couldn’t be fired.
How Netflix Turned Boba Fett into the Most Expensive Star Wars Toy Ever

A rare Boba Fett figure recently up for auction was expected to fetch a high price, as it received a near-perfect grade of NM+ 85+ from AFA – the highest grade AFA has ever given this figure. While a similar figure sold for a significant amount in August 2024 and even included its original packaging, this one sold for only about an eighth of that price. The main reason for the large difference? The character had a major role in a popular Netflix series just two months before the August auction, boosting its collectibility at that time.
Even before the auction, this Star Wars figure was expected to fetch a record price due to its history and excellent condition. But when it was featured on the Netflix show The King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch and called the ultimate Star Wars collectible, it gained worldwide attention and millions of potential bidders. It quickly became more famous than even the iconic first appearance of Darth Vader.
The June auction didn’t get the same widespread promotion as previous ones. Collectors learned about it mainly through the Goldin auction website, their Instagram account, and discussions on Reddit. Without the boost from Netflix, the auction only attracted four bids and resulted in a surprisingly low final price – a rare case where $130,000 feels like a letdown.
The Boba Fett figure remains the most sought-after Star Wars toy, and a recent auction only confirmed this. However, the auction showed that its high price wasn’t simply due to it being the rarest item available. Without the publicity from Netflix, even a highly prized collectible turned out to be worth less than expected.
