Emmerdale recently featured difficult but important scenes focusing on Charity Dingle (played by Emma Atkins) following a sexual assault by Dr. Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker).
For months, a manipulative surgeon has been blackmailing Charity, demanding thousands of pounds and threatening to reveal a damaging secret if she refused to pay.
Todd is aware that Charity became pregnant with Ross Barton’s baby while pretending to be a surrogate for her granddaughter, Sarah Sugden. She gave the baby, Leyla, to Sarah and her husband, Jacob, who raised her as their own.
Charity had desperately gotten money from everyone she knew, even resorting to stealing – including £30,000 worth of items from Caleb Miligan’s warehouse. Despite all this, she realized she still wouldn’t be able to get enough money.

She finally snapped and challenged Todd to do whatever he wanted, even if it was awful. It was the first time Charity felt like she was in charge, and Todd reacted with anger.
Todd and another person argued on Main Street, and Todd confessed she didn’t want to spoil Sarah’s 21st birthday. Afterwards, a very drunk Charity pulled the person who was blackmailing her back to Jacob’s Fold to continue berating them.
When she passed out on the sofa, Todd bolted the door and sexually assaulted her.
Charity finally realized how serious things were. She quickly touched up her makeup, attempting to appear strong and composed before seeing her family at The Woolpack.
She left the party quickly, telling Sarah she had to go, and went straight to the Hotten Police Station to report the person who was abusing her.

The detective suggested a complete medical checkup, hoping it would reveal evidence related to the terrible crime. Charity understood the exam would be difficult and upsetting, but she knew it was the necessary course of action.
In the interview room, the detective informed her that Todd would be arrested shortly for sexual assault.
Charity went home, pretending she was too intoxicated to continue at the party, and immediately went to take a shower. Once alone on the stairs, she finally let herself cry.
Will Todd face justice for her crimes?
