Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka Reveal if They’re “Cool” Dads

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are not like the regular dads—they’re the cool dads.

Their fifteen-year-old twins, Harper and Gideon, gave their full blessing to the couple.

When asked if their teenage children thought they were cool, Neil Patrick Harris told TopMob News at the Tony Awards on June 7th, “I think so.” He added that what he loves most about his kids, Harper and Gideon, is their fantastic sense of humor, and they always make him and David Burtka laugh.

Sometimes, Harris, 52, and Burtka, 51, receive the reciprocal.

Harris said it feels good when people laugh at their jokes, even if it’s just to be polite. They might be hoping for a treat, like a matcha latte, in return, but Harris is happy to take any laughter they can get.

Burtka shared that he’s been trying to figure out how his teenage kids really feel, and he’s heard from their friends that they think he and his husband are cool dads.

For the pair—who tied the knot in 2014—it’s been a fun phase of life as parents.

According to Burtka, the twins are acting like they’re all grown up. Harris added that, as high school students, they’re really fun and very independent.

Burtka explained that people might not want your help, but it’s important to be present to support them when they’re struggling.

Harris praised his husband’s parenting as “amazing,” and Burtka added that they’re fortunate to have well-behaved children.

As for what’s next for their soon-to-be high school sophomores?

Harris believes his children might follow careers in the entertainment industry. He notes that starting acting at a young age, as he did, was unusual and isn’t something he’d necessarily recommend. However, he anticipates they’ll likely work in related fields and hopes they’ll pursue formal education – like going to college to study performing arts – before starting their careers.

Burtka concurred, adding, “They really love the theater, they love movies, they love TV.”
