Russell T Davies’s new Channel 4 drama Tip Toe is already receiving rave reviews from critics.
The show features Alan Cumming as Leo, who owns a gay bar, and David Morrissey as Clive, an electrician. They’re neighbors who constantly clash, and the series is set on a typical street in Manchester. Think of it as similar to ‘Coronation Street,’ but with more adult themes.
The late-night timeslot lets ‘Tip Toe’ tell a much grimmer and more complex story than would be possible during daytime hours. The series examines how communities are growing increasingly divided and hostile, and creator Davies emphasizes that this issue affects everyone, not just LGBTQ+ individuals.
Besides Elizabeth Cumming and Jenny Morrissey, the thriller features a lot of familiar actors, with many having started their careers in soap operas.
Interestingly, Davies actually contributed to Coronation Street’s storylines in 1993. He later wrote the script for the Jack and Vera Duckworth spin-off, Viva Las Vegas!, in 1997.
Here’s a look at everyone in Tip Toe who has had a soap role…
Elizabeth Berrington plays Stephanie

Berrington plays Stephanie, Leo’s close friend who has a number of divisive opinions.
She began her television career with a small role as Avril Stone in the police drama The Bill in 1996, and later appeared as a guest star in Casualty in 1998.
I remember when she came back to that police show on ITV in 2001, and then she really became a familiar face as Ruby Fry on Waterloo Road – she was a regular in seasons five and six. I always enjoyed her work on that show!
In 2016, Berrington was also Nic Katchevski in five episodes of Doctors.
Pooky Quesnel plays Marie

Marie and Clive have been married for a long time, but they’ve grown apart and are now in a marriage where they no longer feel love for each other.
Quensel first appeared on the TV show Doctors, and would return for guest spots twice more. She then became a regular cast member on the Channel 5 soap Family Affairs from 2001 to 2002, before it was cancelled.
After that, she made appearances in popular TV shows like The Bill and Holby City. She then became known for her ongoing role as Rachel Branning in EastEnders.
Following these roles, Quensel appeared in the TV drama Casualty and played the part of geography teacher Olga Fitzgerald in the tenth season of Waterloo Road.
Joseph Evans plays Saul

Saul is Clive’s oldest son and works with him in the family business. However, he also secretly earns money creating content on OnlyFans.
He started his acting career playing Jackson Hodge on Coronation Street. He took over the role in 2023, around the same time Ellie Leach left the show.
Iz Hesketh plays Zee

Hesketh plays Zee, a trans woman who works for Leo at Spit & Polish.
In 2024, she portrayed Kitty Draper on Hollyoaks, a character dealing with immense grief and who took on the identity of a friend who died in a car accident.
Denise Welch plays Diane

Actress and Loose Women panelist, Denise Welch, has a unique award – a ‘CHEE’. This fun, fan-created trophy recognizes actors who have appeared in all four of the UK’s biggest soap operas: Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, EastEnders, and Emmerdale.
Before becoming known as Natalie Barnes on Coronation Street, she had a recurring part as Polly Bell in the show Byker Grove.
She appeared in several TV dramas, including Holby City, Doctors, and Hollyoaks: In the City. She then became known for her role as the lively French teacher, Steph Haydock, on Waterloo Road, which she played from the beginning of the series through season six and recently returned to.
I’ve seen her pop up in so many of my favorite shows! After starting out on Doctors and Holby City, she even had roles on Casualty. But I probably recognize her best as Alison Slater from EastEnders and Trish Minniver in Hollyoaks – she was great in both, honestly.
At the end of 2024, she was Heidi, a member of the jury during Tom King’s trial in Emmerdale.
Gabriel Clark plays Mikey

Mikey is a bartender at Spit & Polish.
Clark became known for playing Ollie Morgan on the soap opera Hollyoaks, starting in 2020 when he took over the part from Aedan Duckworth. He left the show in 2023.
Andy Moss plays Eddie

The first episode shows Eddie leaving Leo’s house after a casual encounter, grabbing his laptop as he goes.
Leo hurried after the other person, accidentally locking himself out of his house. This simple mistake sets off a chain of events that drive the plot forward in the episodes to come.
Andrew Moss is known for playing Rhys Ashworth on the British soap opera Hollyoaks from 2005 to 2012. He continued the role in related shows and even made a guest appearance as Rhys’s ghost in 2014.
He’s since appeared in Casualty and Doctors.
Dominic Holmes plays Regime

I’m really fascinated by the character Regime! She’s a fantastic drag queen who regularly performs at Spit & Polish, but what’s interesting is that she also works as a teacher. It creates a lot of tension later on in the show because her two lives start to clash, and she risks getting exposed.
In 2007, Chris Harper played the role of Daniel Osbourne on Coronation Street. Nine years later, the part was taken over by Rob Mallard.
Lily Best plays Beryl

Introduced in episode three, Beryl is a zany friend of Zee, who helps her choose her new name.
Best played the regular role of Lizzie Chen-Williams in Hollyoaks between 2021 and 2024.
You can watch Tip Toe tonight, Monday, June 8th, on Channel 4 at 9 PM. It’s also available to watch online anytime.
