With the hunt for the next James Bond still ongoing, Idris Elba has clarified rumors about his potential involvement, telling GQ that the talk of him being considered “was never legitimate.”
Idris Elba has clarified that the talk of him becoming James Bond was just a rumour. He never thought it was a likely possibility, explaining that the character was originally created in a specific way. However, he was flattered to even be considered.
Idris Elba also talked about the possibility of being the first Black actor to play James Bond, explaining that certain international audiences might not be receptive to that casting.
I’ve always been a huge James Bond fan, and it’s amazing how popular the character is globally. But honestly, I think a lot of people just aren’t ready to see a Black actor, particularly someone from Africa, take on the role. It’s a shame, but I feel like that’s the reality of it.
“That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

Idris Elba recently shared with GQ his thoughts on the James Bond franchise, emphasizing the importance of staying true to its core identity. He believes Bond should remain a purely escapist fantasy, saying that while a touch of realism can be good, the films shouldn’t attempt to be overly concerned with current social issues or trends. He suggests the franchise should simply focus on delivering the classic Bond experience, rather than trying to cater to changing tastes.
Idris Elba recently dismissed speculation about him potentially becoming the next James Bond. He told People Magazine that he’s no longer being considered for the role, stating, “My name’s not getting thrown out there, no way.”
So, Amazon MGM announced they’re looking for a younger James Bond, and Idris Elba just put any speculation about him taking the role to rest. He was very gracious, wishing them the best and saying he thinks whoever they cast will be fantastic. But he made it perfectly clear – he wasn’t ever seriously considering it, and wasn’t even in the running to begin with. It sounds like he’s completely moved on from the idea, and honestly, he seems really at peace with that.
