In a surprising turn of events, Rick and Morty introduced a possible new menacing character in the post-credits scene of Season 8’s finale. Unlike previous seasons which often delved into grander narratives since Season 5, this season has predominantly featured smaller, family-oriented stories that demonstrate how each character’s transformation throughout the years affects them going forward. Yet, hints of significant future plots remain intriguingly intact.
In the final episode of Season 8, an unexpected character from last season reappeared, causing fresh tension between Beth and Rick. This development appears to be laying the groundwork for a new emotional focus in their relationship. The episode neatly tied up many threads from earlier episodes, hinting at a fresh chapter for this family. However, the scene after the credits suggests a looming threat with the return of Mr. Poopybutthole.

What’s Going On With Mr. Poopybutthole?
In our previous encounter with Mr. Poopybutthole, he utilized Rick’s portal gun to travel to a universe where a counterpart of his was contentedly living with his spouse and child. This alternate version appeared to snatch the happy ending that Mr. Poopybutthole had been striving for in Season 7’s premiere, “How Poopy Got His Poop Back.” However, in the post-credits scene for the finale of Rick and Morty Season 8, titled “Hot Rick,” we find Mr. Poopybutthole reappearing to express his reactions to the season’s events, much like he has done in previous seasons. Yet this time, there’s a twist – something feels different.
In simpler terms, it’s become apparent that this version of Mrs. Poopbutthole in the multiverse has realized that the Mr. Poopybutthole she’s with now is not her husband, and he doesn’t even originate from their universe. Meanwhile, Mr. Poopybutthole carries on as usual, responding to the season’s events. There’s a hint that he might meet an ominous end soon, but this could also be paving the way for the return of a major villain in future seasons, which would be a fittingly absurd choice for a show like Rick and Morty.

Is Mr. Poopybutthole Rick and Morty’s Next Villain?
Interestingly enough, Dan Harmon, one of the creators of the “Rick and Morty” series, along with showrunner Scott Marder, have dispelled the notion that Mr. Poopybutthole could be a future villain in Season 8. They mentioned that this wasn’t part of their original plan for the character. However, after the post-credits scene, it appears he might become a central figure throughout the series, serving as a recurring theme as each season unfolds. There seems to be something brewing with him behind the scenes, and it looks like it will reach its climax leading up to “Rick and Morty” Season 12.
Additionally, it’s worth considering the implications for the character of Mr. Poopybutthole’s wife depicted in this scene. She has been hinted at having a role concerning his “universal invader” and seems to be puzzling over the situation. Given her potential transformation into a new antagonist disrupting the multiverse, viewers should stay alert for possible future developments.
