Prime Video Officially Has Its Answer to KPop Demon Hunters, With an Iconic ’80s Franchise Reboot

No one expected KPop Demon Hunters, which debuted on Netflix in the summer of 2025, to still be a major topic of conversation a year later. Surprisingly, the animated movie didn’t even have toy deals in place before its release. However, after becoming Netflix’s most-watched movie ever and winning an Academy Award, KPop Demon Hunters has become one of the streaming service’s most significant properties. While fans will have to wait for a sequel, the franchise continues to find ways to stay popular.

With the success of KPop Demon Hunters, every streaming service is likely searching for its own unique hit. Now, Prime Video appears to have found a potential one by revisiting a well-known brand. According to Deadline, a live-action reboot of the classic 1980s series Jem And The Holograms is in development. This is unexpected given the previous attempt to relaunch the franchise failed, but the creative team involved is even more surprising.

Jem And The Holograms Reboot Coming to Prime Video

Prime Video has announced that Kilter Films, the production company behind the popular Fallout adaptation, will be responsible for the upcoming Jem And The Holograms series. While it’s logical for Prime Video to continue working with the team that delivered such a successful show, the pairing feels unexpected. It’s possible Lisa Joy, one of the creators, enjoyed the original Jem series when it first aired.

The big news is that a live-action Jem and the Holograms series is coming to Prime Video, with Joy and Nolan’s production company on board. However, that’s all that’s been announced so far. We don’t yet know who will be leading the creative side of the show as a director or showrunner, or what kind of story it will tell.

Originally created by Christy Marx, Jem and the Holograms first aired in 1985. The show followed Jem, a singer, and her band, focusing on both their music and the secret life of Jem, who was actually Jerrica Benton, the owner of Starlight Music. The series was born out of the popularity of music videos and the thriving animation scene of the 1980s.

Given the current popularity of shows like Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, it’s easy to understand why Prime Video is looking for established properties with existing fans. However, it’s particularly surprising that they’ve announced a new version of Jem And The Holograms right now, for a couple of reasons.

Previous attempts to bring this property to life in live-action haven’t gone well. The 2015 film, directed by Jon M. Chu, was a major box office failure, earning just $2.3 million despite costing $5 million to make. Critics didn’t like it either, giving it a dismal 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Just this weekend, another reboot – an Amazon production of Masters of the Universe – also failed to resonate with audiences, earning $29 million domestically on a budget of around $200 million.

Even though it’s been a while, Jem and the Holograms still has a dedicated fanbase. We’ve seen continued interest with new toys, comic books, and re-releases of the original music. The new Jem series from Prime Video is still unproven, but this recent news is a promising sign for the franchise and could be a major success for the streaming platform, bringing it back into the spotlight after a period of inactivity.
