Even though the main Stranger Things show will conclude on New Year’s Day 2026, the story isn’t over. The franchise has already grown with a TV spin-off and an animated series, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, which bridges the gap between seasons 2 and 3. But there’s another project in the works that’s even more important to the main story, and it might arrive on Netflix sooner than expected!
The creators of Stranger Things recently announced a significant change to how the show will be made. Along with this news, hints suggest that new Stranger Things content could arrive on Netflix, potentially before the end of 2026!
Stranger Things Is Ending Its Broadway Show

Currently running since late December 2023, Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a stage play that explores the early story of Henry Creel. Written by Kate Trefry, a writer and co-executive producer for the Stranger Things TV series, and directed by experienced stage directors Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin, the play reveals how young Henry Creel discovered the Upside Down, became connected to the Mind Flayer, and ultimately transformed into the villain known as Vecna.
The series provides a deeper look into Henry’s journey between different worlds. It also reveals the role of Hawkins Lab and explores a disturbing mystery from the past. We see young Joyce Byers and James Hopper Jr. investigating Henry’s first crimes – the murders of animals – and discovering that their classmate was becoming dangerous. The story concludes with Creel being taken to Hawkins Lab, marking the beginning of his time as subject “001.”
Following a popular run, Stranger Things: The First Shadow will conclude its performances at London’s Phoenix Theatre on December 27, 2026, and at the Marquis Theatre in New York City on January 3, 2027. The London show will have played for three years, while the Broadway production will have run for nearly two years.
Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of “Stranger Things,” were surprised and excited when director Stephen Daldry proposed a stage play based on their series. The play, titled “The First Shadow,” proved to be a success. However, it’s difficult to know exactly how well it did. Netflix reports that 1.6 million tickets were sold in both locations, but experts have observed a decline in ticket sales and attendance numbers after the latest season of “Stranger Things” finished airing.
The First Shadow Stage Play Is Getting A Movie Cut

While The First Shadow play received excellent reviews for its performance, fans reacted negatively when the final season of Stranger Things attempted to connect the play’s events to the show’s established storyline. This caused confusion about things like why Joyce and Hopper didn’t recognize the danger their children were in or mention the link between Henry Creel and Vecna. Despite the backlash, the fifth season of Stranger Things clearly drew heavily from the story told in The First Shadow, permanently linking the two narratives.
Netflix announced earlier this year that they would temporarily close performances of First Shadow to film the show as a TV special, similar to how Disney released a filmed version of Hamilton on Disney+. Now that the stage show is ending, it’s likely the filmed version of Stranger Things: The First Shadow will be released after the final performance. This could happen as early as 2027, or even sooner – Netflix might release it around the anniversary of the Stranger Things series finale as a surprise.
