The new Masters of the Universe movie draws heavily from the classic cartoon, especially in its characters and the world of Eternia. However, some key elements didn’t make it into the film. While they might appear in future installments, they’re absent from this version, and we’re highlighting five of the most noticeable omissions.
5. Queen Marlena’s Backstory

The new series, Masters of the Universe, starts by showing Prince Adam’s life as a young man on Eternia. We’re quickly introduced to his mother, Queen Marlena, but she doesn’t have a large role in the story. Because of this, the movie doesn’t reveal much about her past, including how she came to be on Eternia.
The show reveals that Marlena was a pioneering female space explorer who crash-landed on Eternia and eventually met King Randor. She even had the option to return to Earth but chose to stay. The movie doesn’t mention any of this backstory, except that Marlena once lived on Earth, which is why she sends Adam there to protect him and the Sword of Power from Skeletor.
4. Beast Man’s Powers

In Masters of the Universe, Beast Man has a significant role, particularly in a dramatic scene that brings Adam back to Eternia, and he appears alongside Skeletor several times. The movie stays true to his look and the way Skeletor treats him from the original series. However, one important part of Beast Man’s character – his telepathic abilities – wasn’t included.
In the animated series, Beast Man has the power to control many of the creatures and animals on Eternia using his mind. He also leads a group of Shadow Beasts that obey him directly, without needing mental control. While he can’t control every animal – like Cringer or Panther – this ability is still very useful to him.
3. He-Man’s Power Has Limits

When Prince Adam becomes He-Man, he quickly masters his abilities and becomes incredibly powerful. His journey starts with challenges from Trap Jaw, then leads to exciting fights against multiple villains, and ultimately culminates in a showdown with Skeletor. Throughout it all, the series doesn’t hold back his potential or limit him in any way compared to the original show.
As a big fan of He-Man, I always remembered that in the cartoon, overusing his power would turn him back into Prince Adam, and he needed to rest before transforming again. But the movie handles things a bit differently. He does revert to Adam twice – once after a surprise attack from Skeletor, and another time after being stabbed with his own sword! Thankfully, he’s able to power back up both times, and it seems like they’ve dropped the whole ‘power limit’ thing for this version of He-Man, which is cool.
2. Skeletor’s Origins

Later in the movie, Skeletor’s backstory is revealed, and the filmmakers chose to keep it straightforward: he’s simply evil, and that’s all the explanation the story needs. This approach works well for viewers new to the franchise, though it leaves out some of the more complex details from the original series.
The cartoon version of Skeletor is a demon who originally fought with the Evil Horde, trained by Hordak. Together, they invaded Eternia, but their partnership fell apart when Hordak was captured and Skeletor betrayed him – Hordak had kidnapped Adora, the twin sister of Adam. The recent movie doesn’t include any of this backstory, but if a She-Ra story is told in a future installment, we’ll probably see these details revealed.
1. Teela’s Real Mother

Teela’s story in the movie heavily revolves around her relationship with her father, Man-At-Arms. We see how they interact before a major setback, how their connection changes when he’s weakened, and ultimately, his journey to recovery. However, even this doesn’t reveal everything about their history.
Teela is secretly the daughter of the Sorceress, who gave her up as a baby to be raised by Man-At-Arms. The Sorceress continued to watch over Teela from afar, maintaining a special bond with her. A future story could delve deeper into this relationship, or perhaps offer a new take on it, but for now, we’ll have to see what happens.
