Emmerdale confirms major village arrival as new Sugden joins cast and brings “unexpected storylines”

The Sugden dynasty is expanding in Emmerdale, with the arrival of new face Serena.

I was so excited to hear the news today – Casey Al-Shaqsy is joining the cast of the show! She’ll be playing a member of one of the original families, the ones who’ve been part of the story right from the very beginning back in 1972. It’s going to be amazing to see her join such a legendary group!

Now that Victoria Sugden and her son Harry have left, the Sugden family feels much smaller. Robert Sugden is still around and managing the family farm, but the only other people with the Sugden name are his niece Sarah and her husband, Jacob.

Their daughter, Leyla, is also part of the story, but many viewers are aware that her biological parents are actually Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and Ross Barton (Michael Parr).

Actor Al-Shaqsy has begun filming for the drama series in Leeds, both at the studio and on a set built near Harewood House in West Yorkshire. Viewers will first see his character, Serena, on television later this month.

The story immediately plunges the main character into a difficult situation, forcing her to deal with another person’s painful experiences. As she arrives in the village, people will question her reasons for being there and whose side she’s on.

Producer Laura Shaw shared that the Sugdens are a long-standing and important part of Emmerdale, and they’re delighted to have Casey join the family.

The character will be central to several intense and surprising plots, putting her in situations where she must make tough decisions with significant repercussions for many prominent residents of the village.

I’m incredibly excited to be part of such a well-known show and to play the role of Serena Sugden,” Al-Shaqsy said. “She’s a really interesting character with hidden depths, and I can’t wait for viewers to see what happens with her storyline.”

She’s performed in several musical theatre productions, including the UK tours of popular shows like Hamilton, Wicked, and Six.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and from 7am on ITVX.

As a huge soap fan, I follow Michael Adams’ work at TopMob religiously! He’s their Soaps Editor, and honestly, he knows everything that’s going on in all the big shows – from the drama in Weatherfield (that’s Coronation Street for those who don’t know!) to Walford, Emmerdale, and even Hollyoaks. Before TopMob, he was a Soaps Reporter at Metro for a couple of years, and get this – he actually worked on the sets of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale! So, yeah, he’s the real deal when it comes to soap spoilers and gossip.
