Emmerdale airs major exit for villain after being questioned by the police in early ITVX release

This article contains discussions of sexual assault that some readers may find distressing.

Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) has left Emmerdale village.

This follows her sexual assault of Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), who courageously reported the event to the police earlier this week.

For months, the manipulative surgeon blackmailed Charity, demanding thousands of pounds and threatening to reveal a damaging secret if she refused to pay.

Todd learned that Charity became pregnant with Ross Barton’s baby while pretending to be a surrogate for her granddaughter, Sarah Sugden. She gave the baby, Leyla, to Sarah and her husband, Jacob, who then raised her as their own child.

Charity had desperately gotten money from friends and family, even resorting to stealing – including £30,000 worth of goods from Caleb Miligan’s warehouse – but she realized she still wouldn’t be able to get enough.

After drowning her sorrows, she passed out on the sofa and was assaulted by Todd.

Today on the show, police suddenly arrived in the village and asked her to come with them to the station for questioning. She was busy packing her car, preparing to start a new life in Sheffield, and was frustrated by the interruption.

During the interview, Todd changed his account of what happened, claiming the sexual encounter with Charity was consensual and denying the accusations against him.

Detective Sergeant Reid (Angela Lonsdale) had to release her while they waited for the results of forensic tests, and later that day, she delivered disappointing news to the victim. The medical examination hadn’t provided enough evidence to charge Todd with a crime.

Reid reassured Charity he still trusted her and asked if she was holding back any details that could help with the investigation.

She almost revealed the blackmail, but then stopped, having lost all hope that the authorities would help.

Todd said goodbye to Vanessa and Manpreet on Main Street. As she drove towards Sheffield, she waved to Charity from her car window.

Is this the last we’ve seen of her, and will she ever face justice?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and from 7am on ITVX.
