Pavel Durov recently launched a Telegram app specifically designed for Apple Watch, bringing Telegram to even more devices. In other news, Telegram users overwhelmingly voted – with 81.22% approval – to change the name of Toncoin (TON) to GRAM, and the new name officially went into effect on June 15th.
The blockchain will continue to be known as TON. You don’t need to take any action – no swapping, bridging, or claiming is required. Your existing balances, smart contracts, NFTs, staking rewards, and DeFi investments will automatically be transferred over.
GRAM Rebrand Revives Telegram’s 2018 Vision
The name ‘GRAM’ comes from the original plan for Telegram, detailed in a 2018 document. However, the project was stopped by the SEC, and $1.7 billion was returned to those who had invested.
After the original network was discontinued, the community revived it as Toncoin, now managed by the TON Foundation. This rebranding, led by Durov, restores the token to its original vision.
The rename is step four of the Make TON Great Again (MTONGA) roadmap. Earlier milestones included Catchain 2.0, which delivered sub-second transaction finality, and a sixfold fee reduction to near-zero. Telegram also took over as TON’s largest validator earlier this year.
At the time of this report, Toncoin (TON) was trading at $1.66, a decrease of 7.14% over the last 24 hours. Its market capitalization is currently $4.43 billion. The coin’s price rose significantly following Pavel Durov’s announcements in May, but it has since given back some of those gains as the rebrand approaches.
We anticipate complete compatibility between exchanges and projects within the ecosystem by June 22nd. The shift to GRAM will take three weeks, but doesn’t require any updates to your wallets, smart contracts, or underlying systems.
Apple Watch App Extends Telegram to a New Device Category
Pavel Durov revealed on X that Telegram now has an official Apple Watch app. This brings Telegram back to wearable devices after the original watchOS app was removed several years ago. With the new app, users can send messages, voice notes, GIFs, videos, stickers, and share their location directly from their wrist.

The two moves frame a deliberate strategy. The GRAM rebrand sharpens the crypto identity of Telegram’s ecosystem, while the Apple Watch launch extends the platform into consumer hardware.
With around one billion users, Telegram provides TON with a massive potential audience for growth, making it one of the most widely accessible projects in the crypto space.
While the final three steps of the MTONGA process haven’t been revealed, combining a new product release with a network identity update suggests Pavel Durov is making significant progress on the Telegram ecosystem before June 22nd.
