just got a major update. Unfortunately, it means missing out on one of fans’ favorite parts of the franchise.
According to reports, the BBC has canceled the planned Doctor Who holiday special and is now looking for a new production company to handle the series. The BBC confirmed this move on Wednesday, explaining that Russell T. Davies, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter’s Bad Wolf production company are no longer leading the show’s creative direction.
The Future of Doctor Who Has Never Been So Concerning
The BBC’s statement reads, “As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year. Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come.”
“After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode,” the statement continues. “This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory.”
When Will Fans Find Out Who Their Next Doctor Is?
This news arrives over a year after the most recent episode of Doctor Who aired, which ended with a surprising cliffhanger. The episode concluded Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Doctor, showing his version of the character regenerate into a face many viewers will recognize – though it’s likely not the same Rose that longtime fans remember.
Russell Davies said in January that an announcement about the next Doctor would be coming soon. He mentioned a press release was being finalized within the BBC and expected it to be released within a week or two, as he stated on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show.
Despite fan anticipation, no official announcement about the show’s future was released, leaving dedicated Doctor Who fans uncertain about what’s next. However, recent news from the BBC confirms that the show’s production will take longer than most people outside the network initially thought.
