Get ready to stream Project Hail Mary! The 2026 hit movie, starring Ryan Gosling as astronaut Ryland Grace, was a major success, earning $681 million at the box office on a $200 million budget. This made it a record-breaker for Amazon MGM Studios and a rare, standalone blockbuster. Strong reviews and positive buzz helped, with a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (and 95% from audiences) and an ‘A’ score from CinemaScore.
It was such a hit that Amazon MGM actually extended its theatrical window, delaying its debut on VoD and eventually streaming. Even the past weekend, it still pulled in almost $500k domestic across Friday-Sunday [via Box Office Mojo], which isn’t bad considering that was its twelfth(!) weekend, and it was already released on digital last month. Now, the time has come for it to start streaming, with it confirmed via a listing that it’ll be on Amazon’s subscription channel MGM+ (formerly Epix), from June 18th, 2026. The ad-free subscription service costs $7.99 per month.
As a big fan, I was surprised to hear that Project Hail Mary won’t be hitting Prime Video right away. Usually, Amazon releases new movies on both Prime Video and MGM+ at the same time. They did that with Mercy and Crime 101 recently, although those didn’t do as well in theaters. It’s not totally unusual though – American Fiction took about two months to show up on Prime Video, so maybe Hail Mary will follow a similar schedule. It sounds like these streaming deals are probably worked out well before the movie even comes out in theaters.
Why Project Hail Mary Has Been Such A Success (& Why That’ll Continue On Streaming)
So far, Project Hail Mary is not only a major hit of 2026, but many consider it the best film of the year. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller bring their signature playful humor to the screen, which complements Andy Weir’s original novel perfectly. The movie skillfully blends comedy with genuine emotion, particularly in the touching connection that forms between the protagonist, Grace, and an alien named Rocky, played by James Ortiz.
The film also features one of Ryan Gosling’s best performances and truly beautiful visuals. As Spencer Perry of ComicBook noted in his 4.5-star review (which, he admits, could have been five stars!), it’s a science fiction masterpiece, powerfully driven by a phenomenal performance from one of our most talented actors.
What really helped drive the success of Project Hail Mary isn’t just that it’s great, but that it felt like a true event. This was a fresh, original movie that demanded to be seen on the big screen, and ideally, the biggest one possible. Combining the stunning, vast world of space with a beautiful story that’s about friendship and communication, it’s no surprise that it resonated with so many.
Although seeing it in IMAX is a special experience, the movie will likely look fantastic when streamed at home. It’s the type of film you can enjoy repeatedly. While MGM+ doesn’t have a massive audience, this release could attract new viewers, and it’s sure to be a big hit when it becomes available on Prime Video.
Project Hail Mary hits MGM+ on June 18th.
