Typically, the show builds slowly towards major battles and events, often saving them for the ninth episode of each season – though this changed as the stories became more focused. While episodes like “The Spoils of War” and “The Long Night” and the Rook’s Rest battle in House of the Dragon Season 2 were significant, they happened later in their seasons. This is the first time the franchise has kicked off a season with an event of this magnitude.

The next part of the story will likely focus on Rhaenyra Targaryen’s attempt to seize King’s Landing. This should create a fast-paced and dramatic opening, addressing previous concerns about the show’s slow start and leaving a strong impression on viewers.

This happened partly because the Battle of the Gullet was initially meant to be in Season 2 of House of the Dragon. However, decisions made by HBO caused it to be delayed – and likely delayed the King’s Landing storyline too. While it would have made a huge finale for Season 2, it will now be a major event in Season 3 instead.
