Season 3 of House of the Dragon is shaking things up compared to Game of Thrones, and it’s a welcome change. The show is coming back this month after a second season that received mixed reactions, with author George R.R. Martin even voicing concerns about how it differed from his book, Fire & Blood. Some viewers also found the pacing slow and the ending frustrating. However, the new season promises a more action-packed story on HBO this summer, and hopes are high that it will address previous criticisms.
The third season of House of the Dragon is starting with a major event: the Battle of the Gullet. This large-scale sea battle pits Corlys Velaryon’s fleet against the Triarchy, led by Sharako Lohar and backed by Tyland Lannister. It’s expected to be one of the most significant and violent naval conflicts ever seen in Westeros, and the show’s creators are promising a spectacle. Showrunner Ryan Condal has even called it “arguably the craziest episode of TV ever made.”
House Of The Dragon Season 3 Is Coming Out Swinging Like Never Before

Everyone knows the massive Battle of the Gullet will happen right in the first episode of Season 3, and it’s going to be spectacular. The episode is scheduled for 72 minutes on HBO, but that includes a behind-the-scenes segment. The actual episode will likely be around 65 minutes long, with about 25 minutes dedicated to the Gullet battle itself. This means we’re getting the series’ largest battle in its longest premiere episode yet.
It’s unusual for Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon to feature such a large-scale event so early in a season. Typically, the show builds slowly towards major battles and events, often saving them for the ninth episode of each season – though this changed as the stories became more focused. While episodes like “The Spoils of War” and “The Long Night” and the Rook’s Rest battle in House of the Dragon Season 2 were significant, they happened later in their seasons. This is the first time the franchise has kicked off a season with an event of this magnitude.
The next part of the story will likely focus on Rhaenyra Targaryen’s attempt to seize King’s Landing. This should create a fast-paced and dramatic opening, addressing previous concerns about the show’s slow start and leaving a strong impression on viewers.
This happened partly because the Battle of the Gullet was initially meant to be in Season 2 of House of the Dragon. However, decisions made by HBO caused it to be delayed – and likely delayed the King’s Landing storyline too. While it would have made a huge finale for Season 2, it will now be a major event in Season 3 instead.
House Of The Dragon Season 3 Is Finally Getting To The Real War
The first two episodes of House of the Dragon Season 3 will launch the season with a major turning point, firmly establishing the Targaryen civil war. While Season 2 hinted at the start of the war, it unfolded unevenly. This time, with a significant battle – the Gullet – happening right away in the premiere, viewers can expect the intensity to remain consistently high.
The show is now entering a new and more intense phase, essentially becoming a full-scale war story. The creators have hinted at four large-scale battles, including one at the Gullet, and with only eight episodes this season, viewers can expect a lot of action. As the series is planned to conclude after four seasons, we can also anticipate losing some beloved characters along the way.
What really excites me is the potential for this show to strike the perfect balance – epic action needs to be rooted in characters we genuinely care about, just like what made the battles in Game of Thrones so captivating. If they can deliver on what they’re hinting at, though, I truly believe we’re in for some of the most amazing Westeros television we’ve ever seen.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21st on HBO and HBO Max.
