The Gothic 1 Remake stays true to the challenging magic system of the original game. Becoming a powerful mage requires dedication and careful resource management. Players will need to save up both Learning Points and Ore Nuggets, as learning spells and magical circles is quite costly.
This guide covers everything you need to master magic in Gothic 1 Remake, including how Circles, Spells, Scrolls, and Mana work. Let’s explore the game’s magic system together.
How to Be A Mage in Gothic 1 Remake
Magic in Gothic 1 Remake is just as challenging as the rest of the game. Learning magic starts with the quest ‘The Price of Magic,’ but that’s only the beginning. The magic system relies on three key elements.
- Amount of Mana: That is, the energy used to cast spells
- Circle Level: The knowledge and training the character has unlocked.
- Spell Cost and Level: The amount of Mana required to cast the spell, and the Circle Level required to cast that spell.
To cast spells, players need Runes, which function like wands and staves in the Gothic universe. For example, to cast a level 2 spell, you’ll need the corresponding Rune, the ability to unlock that spell level, and enough Mana.
You can unlock new Circles in any of the Factions, but only the Fire Mages at Old Camp and Water Mages at New Camp let you reach Circle Level 5. At Swamp Camp, magic learning stops at the 4th Circle, preventing players from learning higher-level spells.
Now that’s covered, let’s talk about Scrolls. You don’t need to reach any specific level to use them. Scrolls are single-use items you can find throughout the Colony, or you can make them yourself by crafting with Blank Parchment and the Inscription skill.
In Gothic 1 Remake, players can learn spells through two main methods: Runes and Scrolls. Runes are generally the most powerful way to progress as a mage. The basic Runes – Firebolt, Healing, and Charm – are connected to three Gods detailed in the game’s lore.
- Innos represents Fire, and is associated with the Fire Mages from the Old Camp.
- Adanos represents Water, and is associated with the Water Mages from the New Camp.
- The Sleeper represents Psyonic and Wind Magic, and is associated with the Brotherhood, better known as The Swamp Camp.
Players begin as beginners in magic, but once they commit to a faction, they’ll gain access to better training and learn more powerful spells.
If you side with the Swamp Camp, you’ll gain access to the strong Templar class, but you won’t be able to learn the game’s most powerful spells from the 5th and 6th Circles of magic.
Based on these details, if you choose the Old Camp, you’ll be able to play as a Fire Mage. The New Camp lets you train as a Water Mage. Players who join the Swamp Camp can become Acolytes or Templars, specializing in Psyonic and Wind magic. This gives them strong crowd control abilities at the beginning of the game, but they may not be as powerful later on.
As you progress in Gothic 1 Remake and reach the 5th Circle, you’ll meet Xardas, a formidable magician and necromancer. He’s the one who will teach you 6th Circle Magic – though it won’t be free! Whether you’re a Water or Fire Mage, Xardas will be your last and most powerful trainer.
How to Increase Your Mana in Gothic 1 Remake
To increase your Mana stat in Gothic 1 Remake, you have three different options:
- Mind Training (Mana Training) with either Chronos (New Camp) or Torrez (Old Camp).
- Equipping Rings or Amulets. Buying a Mana Ring from Chronos (or finding one) early is quite useful.
- Finding Essence of Spirit, a consumable that permanently increases your Mana stat.
So, leveling up my mind skills takes Skill Points, which is cool. But getting better gear like Rings and Amulets? That means I need to farm Ore to actually equip them. Speaking of finding stuff, I found out where to get Essence of the Spirit! It’s right outside Old Camp – if you head out the South entrance, keep an eye on the right wall, there’s a little crack where it spawns. It’s actually pretty close to where you find Nek’s body during the Missing Warder quest, so I grabbed some while I was there.
Okay, so I found out you can snag another Spirit Essence at the Old Camp. All you have to do is deliver that Sealed Letter – the one for the Fire Mages – to Milten once you finish Chapter 1. It’s a pretty easy pickup!

All Mage Builds in Gothic 1 Remake
We’ve already covered how Fire Mages, Water Mages, and Templars each specialize in a different type of magic. While you can still use other spells with Scrolls or Runes, the most powerful spells require dedicated training within one of those specializations – meaning you’ll need to choose one of those Paths to unlock them.
With that in mind, there are three basic Pure Mage Builds in Gothic 1 Remake:
- Fire Mage: Uses destruction spells and unleashes powerful AoE effects. Choosing to Side with the Fire Mages in the Old Camp, will unlock this path to power.
- Water Mage: Uses ice spells and is great at crowd control. Players can learn Ice Spells from the Water Mages in the New Camp, if they choose to follow that faction.
- Summoner: Relies on Summoning Scrolls to conjure creatures to fight for him. The Summon Skeletons Spell can be cast up to 3 times using Scrolls, creating your own private army. This build will only be available in the late game, sadly.
As a fan, I’m really excited that you can build some powerful characters! You can get to the top tiers of magic – Old Camp, New Camp – through their training paths. And even if you don’t max out your magic circle in Gothic 1 Remake, you can still create awesome hybrid builds like the Templar or a Warrior Mage, focusing on a mix of melee combat and spells.
You can also learn elemental spells like Ball Lightning and Fist of Wind without joining either of the main factions. However, getting these spells involves some stealing and exploring – which is much easier if you have a mount.
Lastly, there’s Transformation magic, which is quite powerful. Players can use Scrolls to turn into various creatures – like Molerats or Shadowbeasts – and then use those creatures’ special abilities to explore or fight.
Lizards excel at swimming and navigating water, while Bloodfly transformation allows for excellent high-altitude exploration. However, the Fire Lizard Transformation is truly exceptional, enabling you to breathe fire and incinerate your opponents.
