Summer is usually a big time for blockbuster movies, but so far in 2026, studios haven’t had much success. The big, spectacle-driven films people expect in the summer haven’t performed well. For example, The Mandalorian and Grogu had the weakest opening weekend for a Star Wars movie in years, and its numbers dropped sharply after that. Masters of the Universe also opened with lower ticket sales than predicted. Now, theaters are hoping Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi film, Disclosure Day, will turn things around. However, early signs suggest it might not break the current trend of big-budget movies struggling to succeed.
Early estimates from The Wrap suggest the new film Disclosure Day will earn between $35 and $40 million in its opening weekend in the United States and Canada. Even at the higher end of that range, it’s predicted to perform slightly below Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, which opened with $41.7 million in 2018. To put that in perspective, The Mandalorian and Grogu made $81.6 million in its first three days, while Masters of the Universe earned just $29.4 million. The lowest projections for Disclosure Day are only a little better than that latter figure.
Can Disclosure Day Outperform Its Box Office Projections?

With a production budget of $115 million (excluding marketing and distribution), Disclosure Day was surprisingly inexpensive for a film of its type. For comparison, The Mandalorian and Grogu cost around $165 million to produce, and Masters of the Universe cost between $170 and $200 million. Disclosure Day doesn’t need to be a massive box office hit to succeed, but a $35 million opening weekend would be considered weak. According to The Wrap, a domestic opening of around $50 million would put the film in a solid position.
Early reactions to Disclosure Day are promising. People who have seen it are saying great things, and it initially received very high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes (though the score has come down slightly). While it might not reach the iconic status of films like Jurassic Park or Close Encounters of the Third Kind, most viewers agree that Disclosure Day is one of Steven Spielberg’s best films in recent years. It’s a moving and intelligent story with the kind of impressive visual effects that Spielberg is known for. Because of this, seeing it in IMAX – on a really big screen – would be the ideal experience and could help the film do well.
There isn’t much direct competition for Disclosure Day’s target audience. While films like The Mandalorian and Grogu or Masters of the Universe performing better could have changed that, Disclosure Day seems poised for a strong opening. However, similar optimism surrounded those films, so it’s still uncertain how well Disclosure Day’s audience will respond. This summer, indie horror films like Obsession and Backrooms have been particularly successful with younger viewers, while traditional summer blockbusters have struggled. With its positive reviews, Disclosure Day could help determine whether the recent lack of success is due to the quality of the films themselves or a shift in moviegoing habits among key demographics.
Steven Spielberg, who will be 80 later this year, is known for creating hugely successful films – he’s made more money at the box office than any other director. While many of his biggest hits, like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., and Jurassic Park, are older classics, Spielberg isn’t quite the box office powerhouse he used to be. This is partly due to the types of films he’s been making recently – The Fabelmans, for example, was geared more towards awards consideration. With his new film, Disclosure Day, releasing in theaters, it’s worth considering whether Spielberg’s reputation alone will be enough to attract large audiences. If people enjoy Disclosure Day as much as critics do, it could prove to be a bigger success than anticipated.
