Perrie Edwards Alludes to “Overlap” in Zayn Malik, Gigi Hadid Romance

Perrie Edwards is giving a shoutout to her ex. 

More than a decade after Perrie Edwards and Zayn Malik ended their engagement, Edwards is now talking about their split and Malik’s later relationship with Gigi Hadid.

Edwards, who first met Malik on The X Factor in 2011, cautiously revealed on the Great Company with Jamie Laing podcast on June 10th that there had been some overlap in their relationships.

Edwards believed that Malik likely found it easier to end his four-year relationship—including a two-year engagement—because of the history between him and Hadid, who had an on-again, off-again relationship from 2015 to 2021.

Edwards explained that it’s usually easier to move on when you’re the one doing the leaving. Being left behind, however, is the really difficult part. It feels like the other person has found someone more attractive or simply better in some way, and that’s how it impacted him at the time.

The 32-year-old, who shares 4-year-old Axel and 5-month-old Alanis with her fiancé, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, believed that Gigi Hadid’s appearance in the 2016 music video for Zayn Malik’s song “PILLOWTALK” marked the end of their relationship.

Edwards remembered a series of frustrating events, starting with a song written about him featuring someone else in the music video. He said it just kept happening – one problem after another.

The “Wings” singer admitted her family didn’t know how to help her through the heartbreak. 

“It was just becoming overwhelming,” Edwards explained. “I burst into tears, and then my dad started crying too. He kept saying he didn’t know how to help me with the pain, and I told him nobody could – it was just awful and I couldn’t understand what was happening.”

TopMob News has reached out to reps for Malik and Hadid but has not yet heard back. 

Zayn Malik, who became a father to a daughter with Gigi Hadid in 2020, has said he wrote the song soon after leaving One Direction in March 2015, but he kept secret who inspired it. He and Edwards broke up in August 2015, and he began dating Hadid the following November.

He explained on The Zach Sang Show in February 2016 that the topic was deeply personal and he preferred not to discuss details, letting listeners draw their own conclusions.

This isn’t the first time Malik has spoken about claims of past mistakes in his relationship with Edwards. Back in 2015, he refuted accusations that he broke up with her over the phone – something his ex-partner continues to insist happened.

In her 2016 book, Our World, Edwards described a devastating breakup, calling it the worst experience of her life. She explained that a four-year relationship, which included a two-year engagement, was ended with just a text message – abruptly and without warning.

Looking back on his relationship with Edwards, Malik—who once said he’d never experienced love, even after dating both Edwards and Hadid—has acknowledged he wasn’t mature at the time.

In a 2024 interview with Nylon, Malik shared that he was in a relationship and even engaged between the ages of 17 and 21. Looking back, he admits he was naive. ‘I thought I knew everything because I was 21 and legally an adult, but really I didn’t know much at all,’ he said.
