Batman is a hugely popular and enduring superhero whose stories have been told for decades. First appearing in comic books in 1939, he quickly expanded into other forms of entertainment, including television shows, films, and video games.
The Dark Knight stands out as a superhero because he feels more human than many others. He’s not just powerful; he’s a highly skilled detective and fighter who uses advanced technology to fight crime. And unlike some heroes, there’s a real, flawed person behind the mask, haunted by a difficult past and limited by his own humanity.
Batman has been a popular movie character for decades, first appearing on film in the 1940s. While many people remember his movies from the 1990s onward, several different actors have played the role over the years, each bringing their own take on the iconic hero.
As a huge Batman fan, I’ve seen a lot of different actors take on the role, and each one brings something unique. But I have to say, Ben Affleck’s version really stands out to me. He looks like Batman – the costume is just so accurate! But it’s more than that; he moves and carries himself like a hero who’s truly been through some battles, someone really world-weary and tough. It just feels incredibly believable.
Ben Affleck has played Batman in five films, starting with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and most recently in The Flash (2023), where he had a smaller part. He also appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). While all of his Batman films are good, here are six scenes that really highlight his performance.
6. Recruiting The Flash – Justice League
In several DC movies, Ben Affleck (as Bruce Wayne) and Ezra Miller (as Barry Allen) have some memorable interactions. In Justice League, Bruce Wayne tries to bring together a team of superheroes and personally meets Barry Allen by waiting for him at his hideout.
Barry insists he doesn’t have any superpowers, but Bruce quickly tests him by throwing a batarang. In an impressive display, Barry slows down time and effortlessly catches the batarang, proving to himself that Bruce is indeed Batman.
Barry and Bruce have an uncomfortable talk, during which Barry admits he’s lonely and needs friends. Bruce invites him to join the team, and in just a few minutes of conversation, we gain a lot of insight into who the Flash is.
There were definitely other moments I could have included, like Bruce Wayne’s hilarious claim that his superpower is simply being wealthy. But I ultimately chose this scene because it really gets to the heart of who the Flash is and what drives him. It’s a great introduction for anyone new to the character.
5. Bruce Wayne Runs Headfirst Into Danger – Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
Early in the movie Batman v Superman, there’s a striking scene that helps viewers who aren’t deeply familiar with DC Comics. It shows a flashback to Superman’s fight with General Zod in Man of Steel. This battle over Metropolis was incredibly destructive, with Superman and Zod repeatedly smashing each other through buildings and walls.
The destruction in Metropolis, as seen in Batman v Superman, is revisited, but this time from Bruce Wayne’s point of view. He witnesses hundreds of people running from the chaos caused by the Kryptonians’ fight. The battle is intense, and a Wayne Enterprises building is destroyed, even with people still working inside. This is a particularly striking moment as Bruce bravely runs towards the wreckage and into the resulting silence.
The movie Man of Steel shows the devastating impact of the invasion on ordinary people, including families and children. This scene highlights their vulnerability and explains why Bruce Wayne is initially distrustful of Superman.
4. The Scars Conversation – The Flash
As we’ve discussed, Bruce Wayne and Barry Allen have some memorable scenes together in various films. A notable moment, often referred to as the ‘scars’ conversation, involves Barry telling Bruce he might be able to time travel, and Bruce warning him against it.
Barry and Bruce start arguing about how small changes can have huge consequences, but their discussion soon turns to more personal matters. Barry proposes that if he could travel faster than light, he could save both of their parents. While saving his parents is a powerful drive for Batman, he acknowledges that trying to change the past isn’t the right path and they need to focus on moving forward.
This scene features a particularly impactful conversation between the two characters. Barry tells Bruce, “Your tragedy made you a hero,” and Bruce responds with, “And also made me alone.” It’s a deeply emotional moment between two incredibly powerful individuals, and it marks the final appearance of Ben Affleck as Batman in the movies.
3. Armored Batman Fights Superman – Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
As you might expect, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is setting the stage for a huge fight between Batman and Superman. Everyone knows Batman is a skilled fighter, but even casual fans of Superman understand how difficult it would be for a regular human, even one in a suit, to stand a chance against him.
Batman showed up for the fight wearing his iconic armored suit. While Superman is much stronger, Batman came prepared with special weapons designed to give him a fighting chance.
The fight sends them crashing into an industrial building. Superman initially tries to reason with Batman, begging him to stop, but Bruce is determined to fight, and they quickly become locked in a brutal, life-or-death struggle.
This fight stands out because both Batman and Superman have dedicated fans. Whether you like the result or not, it’s still one of the most exciting parts of Batman v Superman, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat for over eight minutes.
2. Knightmare Future Scene – Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
The Knightmare scene in Batman v Superman is truly memorable for its originality. It shows us Batman’s fears about Superman, and the unsettling dream sequence highlights what Bruce Wayne imagines could occur if Superman were to become a threat to people.
The scene opens on a destroyed city where Batman is trying to obtain what he thinks is kryptonite from a dangerous group of armed men. They unexpectedly attack him, leading to one of the most visually stunning action sequences in the movie.
This Batman is different from the one we typically see – he doesn’t hesitate to use force in response to attacks. One standout scene features him battling a large group of mercenaries in a single, unbroken shot, with the camera smoothly following all the action. It’s also notable that the Parademons flying overhead don’t engage him, likely because they’re drawn to fear, and he doesn’t show any.
The scene turns nightmarish for Batman as he finds himself captured and restrained, just as he feared. Then, Superman arrives, and the situation escalates quickly. It’s unsettling to watch the guards kneel before him, and even more shocking as he instantly disintegrates the prisoners with his heat vision.
1. Warehouse Brawl – Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
It’s no surprise to most Batman fans, but the warehouse fight in Batman v Superman is the best scene in the movie. Many consider it one of the greatest Batman scenes ever filmed, and it’s definitely a highlight for Ben Affleck’s performance as the character.
The situation is incredibly dangerous. Lex Luthor’s thugs have taken Martha hostage and are hiding her in an old, abandoned building. Batman quickly arrives, and the next four minutes are filled with intense, non-stop fighting.
Batman faces off against a large group of enemies in a dynamic and exciting scene. Despite the quick cuts and fast action, it’s easy to follow what’s happening. Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman shows him as both nimble and incredibly strong. The scene begins with Batman dramatically breaking through the floor, surprising the guards waiting for him at the door. It quickly becomes clear that Batman relies on his gadgets and raw power to overcome his opponents.
The warehouse fight is particularly striking because it feels so realistic. Every hit lands with impact, and Batman comes across as a highly trained fighter protected by his suit, not someone with superpowers – which is exactly how he should be portrayed. There’s even a moment where a criminal shoots Batman in the head, but the bullet harmlessly bounces off his mask.
The fight scene really highlights how skilled Batman is. He isn’t necessarily the quickest fighter, but he doesn’t have to be. It clearly shows he can handle any number of enemies and stay in control.
