LeBron James is going on defense when it comes to his children.
As a huge fan, I was so glad to see LeBron defend his son, Bronny, against all the talk about him only getting opportunities because of who his dad is. It’s frustrating to see people dismiss Bronny’s hard work and talent, suggesting he’s succeeding solely because of nepotism. LeBron really shut down those claims, and it was great to see!
LeBron James told Time magazine that the young athlete has rightfully earned his place as a professional. He also defended his family and team, stating they won’t tolerate criticism or attacks.
The NBA champion—who shares Bronny, 21, along with son Bryce, 18, and daughter Zhuri, 11, with wife Savannah James—continued to double down on fiercely defending his family.
He made it clear he wouldn’t tolerate criticism of his parenting. He explained that his experiences growing up, and what he lacked, motivated everything he’s built, and he wouldn’t allow anyone to attack his role as a father. He didn’t care what people said about his child’s basketball career, but any negative comments about his fatherhood were off-limits.
And while LeBron, 41, has won four NBA championships over the course of his 22 years in the league so far, none of the accolades compare to being able to play alongside Bronny, who recently completed his second season with the Lakers.
LeBron said that, looking back on his entire basketball career, becoming the league’s all-time leading scorer was his greatest achievement.
Bronny (born LeBron Raymone James Jr.) joined the NBA after he was selected by the Lakers in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, less than a year after he suffered cardiac arrest during a basketball practice at USC. He made his NBA regular-season debut in October 2024 alongside his father, with the pair making history as the first father-son duo in the league’s history.
I’ve been following Bronny’s journey closely, and while there’s been a lot of talk about his potential in the NBA, it’s easy to forget he and LeBron haven’t actually shared the court together much. He’s only played 69 games for the Lakers so far, and a lot of his time has been spent honing his skills with their G League team – really focusing on development before getting major minutes.
Last season included a truly historic moment for LeBron James and his son, Bronny. In April, they made NBA playoff history as the first father-son duo to play in a game together.

LeBron clearly recognized the significance of the moment, remembering how he’d once said he wanted to play with his oldest son.
After the Lakers defeated the Houston Rockets, LeBron James reflected on a remarkable year. He said, ‘So many unexpected things have happened this year.’ He highlighted playing in a playoff game alongside his son as the most memorable and unbelievable moment of his career, according to ESPN.
LeBron James is defending his son, Bronny, against accusations of receiving special treatment, and Bronny understands the scrutiny that comes with having a famous name and the potential for criticism throughout his basketball career.
Bronny James said that his initial reaction to talk about him benefiting from his father’s fame was to ignore it and focus on his work, trying to stay positive. However, he admitted that sometimes the criticism actually motivates him. He feels people assume he’s emotionless and doesn’t care about what they say, which bothers him.
To see what more stars and their kids had to say about nepotism, read on.

In a recent interview on the February 7, 2024 episode of Today, the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson said she initially found the discussion around so-called “Nepo Babies” frustrating and dull.
Calling the issue “lame,” the Fifty Shades of Grey star added, “So the opportunity to make fun of it, I jumped at”—referring to an SNL sketch poking fun at the controversy that she took part the previous month while hosting the show.

Just a quick note that this discussion has been ongoing for some time. Emma has consistently rejected the idea that her success is due to being Julia Roberts’ niece and Eric Roberts’ daughter.
The actress, who was twenty years old at the time, explained to PopEater in 2011 that many people assume she benefited from nepotism, which she finds frustrating. She argues that it’s not true, pointing out she’s auditioned for countless roles and hasn’t always been cast. She added that while someone might be able to help you land one job, they can’t guarantee a career full of opportunities.

Goldie Hawn‘s daughter doesn’t bother to get the knives out when talk turns to nepotism.
Kate, who was raised alongside Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn’s partner, told The Independent in December 2022 that she wasn’t bothered by how people labeled her family. “We’re a family of storytellers – it’s just who we are,” she explained. “Whatever people call us won’t change that.”
The mother of Ryder and Bingham (her sons with Chris Robinson and Matthew Bellamy) and Rani (her daughter with partner Danny Fujikawa) shared that she believes this kind of situation—people getting opportunities due to who their parents are—is actually more common in other fields. She specifically mentioned modeling and business, noting she’s often been in business meetings and wondered how unqualified some people were, realizing they were only there because of their family connections.
Ultimately, she added, “If you work hard and you kill it, it doesn’t matter.”

I know I’ve been incredibly lucky in life. As Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber’s daughter, I’ve always had access to amazing guidance and advice, and honestly, that’s something I feel really grateful for. I definitely recognize the privilege that comes with having parents like mine, and I don’t take it for granted. I shared this with Elle magazine earlier this year.
The actress from Bottoms explained that artists won’t compromise their creative vision to cater to anyone, especially not to protect children. She emphasized that true art requires staying true to one’s own vision, and that’s what she cares about most.
She also pointed out that people generally don’t want to collaborate with those who are difficult or unkind. While acknowledging that connections and family ties play a role, she believes that if those connections were truly as powerful as some suggest, we’d see them even more frequently.

Carving out her own cinematic universe, Elizabeth is proof that, sometimes, it just takes one.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s younger sister realized what nepotism meant even when she was a child. She told Glamour UK in 2021 that, though she didn’t know the word for it then, she felt uneasy about not earning her own success. She was around 10 years old at the time and says it stemmed from her own insecurities.

Ben Stiller, whose parents were well-known performers Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller, thinks having a connection can only take you so far in the entertainment industry.
After some criticism about casting choices—specifically, Sean Penn’s son Hopper in a short film directed by Steven Spielberg’s daughter Destry and written by Stephen King’s son Owen—Ben Stiller tweeted in 2021 about the situation. He said, based on his own experience (and stating he didn’t know the individuals involved), he believed they had all likely faced difficulties. He pointed out that navigating the entertainment industry is tough for everyone, but especially challenging for those without established connections, and ultimately, success depends on talent and hard work.
Acknowledging that Hollywood isn’t always fair, the actor from Meet the Parents explained that people without talent usually don’t succeed in the long run, even if they get an initial opportunity through connections or family ties.
Ben shared his opinion right away, but in February 2023, he still became part of the online conversation when Steve Martin jokingly labeled him a “nepo baby” in a preview for their Super Bowl commercials with Pepsi.

The former host of The Talk will always support his twin daughters, Charlie and Dolly, and his wife, Rebecca Romijn. He’s also preparing the girls for potential criticism they might encounter in the future.
He told Us Weekly that he warned his child, ‘People are going to accuse you of having an unfair advantage because of your family connections. It’s inevitable – the ‘nepo baby’ label is coming.’
He added, “You have to work for this. There’s no shortcuts. It’s going to be even harder for you!”
But he is, of course, willing to help out his daughters.
He described being able to sit with his daughter at a diner while she prepared for a high school play audition, offering guidance on her lines. He felt that offering this kind of advice was the most valuable thing he could share with his children.

Dylan Penn understood why someone might be upset that she was cast in the 2021 film Flag Day, especially since her father, Sean Penn, directed it. However, she also pointed out that as an actress, she’s faced a lot of rejection and has been auditioning for a long time.
Dylan addressed the recent controversy surrounding her brother’s role in a short film directed by Steven Spielberg’s daughter, explaining that success in the entertainment industry often comes down to connections. She pointed out that networking is crucial, regardless of family background – even if you’re related to someone famous like Sean Penn.
Dennis Hopper, who first appeared in a movie directed by Sean Penn in The Last Face, mentioned to TopMob News back in February that the recent discussions about celebrities with famous parents hadn’t bothered him much.
He said he’s okay with whatever people think of his work with his mother, Robin Wright, on the film Devil’s Peak. He doesn’t worry about accusations of nepotism, emphasizing that he’ll always be as dedicated and professional as anyone else, and won’t let family connections affect the quality of his work.
Hopper pointed out that working with his father was just as difficult – a ‘great nightmare’ – as it was for any other actor who wasn’t also his son.
He explained that on any film project, he’d be held to the same standards as everyone else. If he made a mistake on the first day, he’d be fired, and if he simply wasn’t good enough, he wouldn’t be kept on the job – admitting he’d experienced that possibility firsthand.

Zoë Kravitz explained to Elle magazine in February 2022 that people often assumed she landed roles because of her famous parents, Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz.
“It was challenging,” Zoë said. “But I recognize I had a lot of advantages. Finding an agent happened quickly, and that definitely opened doors for me. Still, I reminded myself that I work really hard, and even as a kid, I was always performing for my grandparents. That passion came from within me, not from my family connections.”
Following the controversy, the actress explained to GQ some months later that it’s common for people to work in their family’s profession. She pointed out that this is actually the origin of surnames – people were often identified by their family’s trade, like being known as the ‘Black family’ if they were blacksmiths.

In a November 2022 interview with Elle, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis’s daughter explained that people will likely have opinions about her and how she achieves her goals. However, she emphasized that the only way to succeed is to be genuinely suited for the role you’re pursuing.
That’s understandable, but the comment from the star of The Idol about this popular issue immediately sparked a huge wave of responses.
Lily-Rose explained that she’s become very mindful of how she talks about her upbringing. She believes her parents did everything they could to give her a regular childhood, but she acknowledges it wasn’t typical. She’s very aware that her experiences growing up were different from most people’s.

Responding to the discourse triggered by Lily-Rose, Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin‘s daughter agreed that the kids of celebs will ultimately rise and fall on the strength of their own work. But the first rise is usually achieved thanks to a major boost.
In a TikTok video from November 2022, Ireland explained that she owes her success to her parents, and believes a common mistake people make is failing to acknowledge that support.
People often think you either have natural talent or you don’t. But things would be much easier to understand – and more relatable – if everyone was just honest about their skills and how they developed them.

Gwyneth Paltrow explained on Hailey Bieber’s YouTube show in July 2022 that growing up with famous parents—Blythe Danner and Bruce Paltrow—gave her advantages others didn’t have, creating an uneven starting point. But she believes that once you benefit from that initial advantage, you then have to work much harder to prove yourself and be exceptionally good at what you do.
Bruce directed Gwyneth in her first acting role, the 1989 TV movie High, and Steven Spielberg then cast her in his 1991 fantasy film Hook, giving the 14-year-old actress a significant opportunity.
Gwyneth Paltrow recently discussed the scrutiny faced by children of celebrities. In an October 2023 interview with Bustle, she explained that even before the current public conversation, there was a tendency to judge people based on their parents’ fame. She described the term ‘nepo baby’ – used to describe these individuals – as a harsh label.

Stellan Skarsgård, the actor known for his role in Dune, recently discussed the topic of ‘nepo babies’ – children of famous parents who benefit from that connection. He shared that his youngest son, Kolbjörn, was being criticized at school for having a well-known father.
He told Vulture that when classmates call him a “nepo baby,” it really hurts his feelings. He doesn’t have many friends at school and feels alone, and unfortunately, unkind kids seem to enjoy making fun of him online.
Stellan added, “It’s ridiculous, really. If you lack the talent, no one will hire you for worthwhile work.”

Having a famous father meant the actress and activist knew her upbringing was far from typical.
Jane recalled that moving to the East Coast when she was ten made her aware that she was seen differently. As she explained to Harvard Business Review in 2018, people’s reactions to her – both positive and negative – were tied to her father, actor Henry Fonda. Some were eager to befriend her because of who he was, while others disliked her because of him. It was a mixed experience that made her somewhat self-aware.
The actress, a two-time Oscar winner, explained that having a famous father in the movie business definitely helped her career initially, as people were naturally more interested in her. However, she was determined to prove she earned her roles through talent, not just her family name. To do this, she pushed herself incredibly hard, taking on much more work than necessary – four classes a week instead of just one – to demonstrate her dedication and avoid being seen as someone who wasn’t serious about her craft.

Being the child of someone successful in a field you also love is a wonderful opportunity, as Bryce Dallas Howard, known for her role in Jurassic World, shared in a 2020 interview with The Daily Beast. She recalled her first role – ‘Redheaded Audience Girl’ in her father Ron Howard’s film Parenthood – and emphasized that while her father’s success was a benefit, his unwavering support, encouragement, and genuine respect from the beginning meant even more to her.
Bryce explained that people often struggle with self-doubt, or others might dismiss their accomplishments by attributing them to luck or outside help. But he added that those kinds of comments are usually insignificant.

Ethan Hawke jokingly admitted he’s a “nepo dad” – someone who uses family connections to help their children in the entertainment industry. He told Variety in September that he happily took the opportunity to direct his daughter, Maya, in her film Wildcat, and he isn’t ashamed of it.
Maya, who portrays Flannery O’Connor in the film, admitted she sometimes doubted her performance during filming. She explained that online reactions often lack depth, and emphasized how much she values her relationship with her father, with whom she hopes to collaborate in the future. They simply enjoy spending time together.
Maya, who was 25 at the time, acknowledged she would eventually have to succeed on her own merits. In a 2021 interview with People magazine, she explained that she expected a limited number of opportunities based on her parents’ reputation. After that, she said, she’d have to prove herself, or risk losing those advantages. ‘I just want to try not to fail,’ she added.

Just before winning her first Academy Award for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Jamie Lee Curtis, daughter of the famous actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, playfully poked fun at current trends.
Jamie Lee Curtis, accepting her SAG Award in February 2023, acknowledged her privileged background. ‘With actor parents and an actor husband – Christopher Guest – I know some people will assume I’m here because I’m a ‘nepo baby,’ and I understand that,’ she said. ‘But honestly, at 64 years old, this is just incredible.’

In a 2018 interview on the Armchair Expert podcast, Colin explained that when he was starting his career, he initially underestimated how much his father, Tom Hanks, would influence people’s perceptions of him. He thought people would see him as an individual, and give him a fair chance, but he quickly learned that wasn’t the case.
The 46-year-old, whose first movie role was “Male Page” in his dad’s 1996 directorial debut That Thing You Do!, said on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend in October 2022 that he does “credit the old man” for advising him to only go into acting if he really wanted to.
Tom advised him, “‘If you don’t really want this, then come up with something else, ’cause you will be miserable.'”

When asked about the recent attention on celebrity children following in their parents’ footsteps, Tom Hanks – father to Colin and Elizabeth (with late ex-wife Samantha Lewes) and Chet and Truman with wife Rita Wilson – explained that working in entertainment is just “the family business.”
Tom explained to Reuters in January 2023 that his family has always been immersed in creative pursuits. He noted that he and his wife raised four children, all of whom are involved in some form of storytelling.
He also acknowledged it wasn’t a stretch for director Marc Forster to cast Truman as Tom’s younger self in A Man Called Otto. “But the final analysis,” the Oscar winner told ET at the film’s premiere, “is the person has to show up on the day and hit the marks and tell the truth. Only he can make that decision. It was totally up to him.”

A scion of one of the most storied Hollywood dynasties, Drew couldn’t escape her famous last name.
Although being the granddaughter of famous actor John Barrymore brought certain expectations, Drew Barrymore explained on her talk show in January 2023 that she felt she still needed to prove herself. She compared it to someone from a family of lawyers – even with a parent running the firm, they still have to pass the bar exam and earn their position. She believes as long as people are supportive and not critical, acknowledging family connections is okay.

Heidi Klum’s oldest child is doing well, likely because of her parents, Heidi and Seal. However, it’s ultimately up to the child to maintain that well-being.
Look, it’s no secret – my parents are well-known, and yes, that definitely opened some doors for me early on. I’m aware how fortunate I am to have had that initial boost, and I know a lot of people would love to start with the advantages I did. But I want everyone to know I’m putting in the effort, the hours, and the hard work to build my own path. Right now, I’m really focused on independence – traveling on my own, continuing my education, and forging my own identity. It’s amazing to share that passion with my mom, though – we really connect over our shared love for what we do.

Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann’s oldest daughter was upset by being labeled a “nepo baby,” but she’s working on not letting it bother her.
I need to keep working hard and create quality projects, like so many others have before me,” the Euphoria star explained in a September 2022 interview with Net-a-Porter. “It’s still early in my career, and I haven’t built up a large body of work yet, but I hope to eventually look back with pride on what I’ve accomplished independently.

In December 2022, actress Lena Allen tweeted that people should be more concerned about individuals benefiting from family connections in professions like law, banking, and politics, where it truly impacts people’s opportunities. She emphasized her own hard work and added, with a touch of sarcasm, ‘But that’s none of my business.’
After facing criticism about being a “nepo baby” – someone benefiting from famous parents (actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen) – on TikTok, Lily Allen agreed it was a fair point to discuss.
As a long-time observer of this industry, it’s painfully obvious that we’re not seeing enough diversity when it comes to class and race. It really hurts everyone when certain voices are missing. Honestly, while the focus on ‘nepo babies’ is understandable, I think it’s a bit of a distraction. We need to be having a much bigger conversation about wealth inequality and the lack of support systems and funding for people who don’t have those advantages.

Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain and Cindy McCain, believes it’s perfectly okay to be proud of successful parents – as long as you acknowledge your own accomplishments too.
In December 2022, she posted on Instagram encouraging other people with famous parents—what she called ‘Nepo babies’—to simply recognize the advantages their family name has given them and then focus on their own skills and hard work. She added that pretending this isn’t a benefit makes them sound unpleasant.

Does Hailey Baldwin, daughter of Stephen Baldwin and niece of Alec, Billy, and Daniel Baldwin, need to explain her privileged background any further after wearing a “Nepo Baby” t-shirt in January 2023?
Though she did.
Hailey explained that her recent message was a direct response to widespread conversation, and she wanted to make her position clear. Speaking on The Circuit With Emily Chang in June, the founder of Rhode Skin acknowledged her privileged background, stating, ‘I fully accept that I am a product of nepotism.’

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore‘s youngest daughter gave big sisters Rumer Willis and Scout Willis a sartorial shout-out about being the children of movie stars in February 2023.

Oh my gosh, you guys, did you hear what Meg Ryan said about Jack?! She told Glamour that Jack is just… unbelievably talented! And get this – she actually thinks he’s a more natural actor than she is! Can you believe it? It’s so sweet and amazing that she’s so proud of him, even after everything with Dennis. I just adore them both, and Jack is clearly destined for huge things! I knew it!
Meg pointed out that labeling someone a ‘nepo baby’ unfairly ignores their hard work, talent, and awareness of any advantages they might have.

Jack is certainly aware of the assumptions that are made about the children of actors.
In a 2022 interview with Thrillist, the star of The Boys anticipated people would assume they understood how he landed the role. He acknowledged they’d likely continue to do so, and he was okay with that. What mattered most to him was knowing, personally, how he’d achieved the opportunity.
Now 31, Jack decided long ago there was no point trying to hide his parentage.
He explained on the podcast Allegedly with Matthew Cole Weiss in 2016 that he wasn’t trying to avoid the acting world. In fact, he’s a big admirer of both of his parents’ work. He also pointed out that because he wasn’t allowed to audition until he turned 18, he’d be thrilled with the job even if his parents weren’t actors.
