The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began as a serious, edgy comic book, so it’s fitting that its most celebrated comic shares that same dark tone. The Last Ronin, published by IDW, is widely considered the best TMNT comic ever created. It depicts a bleak future where all but one of the Turtles have been killed by Shredder and the Foot Clan. This lone survivor, known as the Last Ronin, spends his life seeking revenge for his brothers’ deaths. The original comic series was incredibly popular, leading to several follow-up stories and an upcoming video game. Even in this grim and hopeless world, the characters sport fantastic new costumes that still reflect who they are.
In a dark and oppressive New York City controlled by the Shredder’s grandson, survival is the main concern, not fashion. However, the clothes worn by the city’s fighters are both cool-looking and useful – perfect for stealth and battling countless opponents.
7) April O’Neil

From the start, April O’Neil has been the Ninja Turtles’ closest human friend and a valued member of their family, the Hamato Clan. Even after the new Shredder tragically killed many of the Turtles and her husband, Casey Jones, she bravely continued fighting to free New York from his rule. As a leader of the underground resistance, the war has visibly impacted April. She lost her left arm and right leg, now using prosthetics to replace them. While she still favors her iconic yellow outfit, it’s largely hidden beneath protective armor and gear, showing how she’s become a hardened, experienced warrior who remains determined and resilient.
6) Yi

When the original Ninja Turtles died, their friend Casey Jones exposed four baby turtles to ooze to continue their legacy. These four babies were then raised by Casey’s daughter, Sherry, to become the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Unlike the original identical brothers, these four belong to different turtle species, making them more visually distinct. Yi is the smallest of her siblings, but she more than makes up for it with her brains. This often leaves her decked out with all manner of tools and gadgets, like the late Donatello. Easily the most striking part of Yi’s design are the yellow markings around her eyes which naturally mimic the shape of the Ninja Turtles’ iconic bandanas.
5) Uno

The Ninja Turtles are traditionally known for their green color, but Uno is different. As one of the new generation of Turtles and their leader, Uno stands out with his pale white skin and grey shell. This unique look suits his confident personality. He also has a distinctive black marking on his head. Like the original Turtles, Uno doesn’t wear much clothing, highlighting his skills as a fighter. Plus, Uno has a special ability no other Turtle has: he can change his skin to black for camouflage, making him a perfect ninja.
4) Odyn

Odyn is the newest of the Ninja Turtles, and while he’s the gentlest and least experienced, he’s also the largest and strongest. This creates a striking contrast between his personality and how he looks. He’s physically very different from his brothers, with a much bulkier build and spiky scales that make him appear quite intimidating. He wears a scarf as a tribute to the late Raphael, which can also be pulled up as a hood. Plus, his unique ability to harden parts of his body into stone is a really cool and powerful skill.
3) Casey Marie Jones

The daughter of April O’Neil and Casey Jones, Casey Marie Jones has inherited the skill and heroism of both her parents. April raised her as a part of the resistance movement after her father died. Casey was taught to be a tough fighter who would fight ceaselessly against the Shredder’s regime. Not only would she help Mikey regain his will to fight, but she would also become the mother and sensei figure to the next generation of Ninja Turtles. Casey’s design perfectly honors the heroes who came before her, as she wears a modified version of her father’s signature hockey mask and, after Mikey’s death, she dons his black trenchcoat. Her purple combat suit also speaks to her warrior upbringing and subtly resembles Nightwing, a similar next-generation hero.
2) Shredder

No Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles story is complete without the Shredder. After the Ninja Turtles killed the original Shredder, the villain’s grandson, Oroku Hiroto, stepped up to finish his family’s war against the Hamato Clan. Hiroto was responsible for killing off most of the Ninja Turtles and their allies. In this dark future, Hiroto became the ruler of an authoritarian New York City. Hiroto’s Shredder costume is powerful, awesome, and befits his role as leader and warrior. Wearing a suit made of nanites, Hiroto can generate blades and additional armor in an instant. The sleek metallic look and the skull-like face marking all come together to deliver a Shredder who perfectly blends ancient ninja tradition with state-of-the-art technology.
1) The Last Ronin

This dark take on the Ninja Turtles sees Michelangelo as the last one standing after his brothers are killed. Once the team’s carefree, pizza-loving member, Mikey has become a brooding and skilled fighter. His new look reflects this change: he’s traded his orange mask for a black one and now wears heavy leather armor and multiple weapon belts. As a tribute to his fallen brothers, and to demonstrate his complete skill set, Mikey carries all four of their weapons, making him the most dangerous Turtle ever.
