2026 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for Spider-Man fans, with a surge of his classic villains appearing in new movies and shows – a welcome change after a period without them. Spider-Man and Batman are widely considered to have the greatest rogues’ galleries in comic books. Both Marvel and DC heroes have faced off against incredibly memorable enemies like Green Goblin, the Joker, Doc Ock, the Riddler, Electro, and Bane, just to name a few.
With so many Spider-Man and Batman movies made over the years, a lot of their classic villains have already appeared in live-action films. Now, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is starting what could be its second set of three movies – a remarkable achievement that opens the door for even more villains to join the fun.
The new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie will include a variety of classic Marvel villains like The Hand, Boomerang, Tarantula, Scorpion, and Tombstone. However, this isn’t the only Spider-Man film coming out in 2026. Another live-action Spider-Man project is already in the works with its own set of compelling villains.
Nicolas Cage recently played Ben Reilly in the Prime Video series Spider-Noir. This role is separate from his voice work as Spider-Man Noir in the animated Spider-Verse films. The series featured Spider-Man battling classic villains like Sandman and Silvermane. While facing tough enemies is common for live-action Spider-Man, Spider-Noir ended with a surprising twist that sets the stage for a new direction with Spider-Man’s villains.
Spider-Noir Mostly Does Away With Tragic Villain Endings
In Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies, most of the villains who show up onscreen have had tragic endings. Those include major deaths, such as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin being killed by his own glider after an emotional fight with Maguire’s Spider-Man, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock sacrificing himself to destroy his unstable fusion reactor, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio framing Peter Parker for his death and revealing he was Spider-Man to the world, and more. That also connects to villains like Michael Keaton’s Vulture going to prison and his family learning he was a bad guy.
Unlike most Spider-Man stories, the animated series Spider-Noir gives several villains positive resolutions. While truly evil characters like Silvermane and Megawatt meet grim fates, those with more complex pasts—including Tombstone, Sandman, and Cat Hardy—all find happiness. Sandman and Tombstone are both cured of their life-threatening mutations, and with Silvermane gone, Tombstone is free to build a life with Cat. This show stands out by giving multiple villains satisfying, happy endings.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Could Repeat Spider-Noir’s Villain Change
Following the Spider-Noir storyline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day appears to be introducing a fresh wave of Marvel villains, and it will feature a surprising enemy. Sadie Sink, known for Stranger Things, is rumored to be playing Jean Grey from the X-Men in the 2026 MCU film. While she wasn’t shown in the first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, it hinted she’ll be a villain who controls others and is responsible for the tank seen in the footage. If Jean Grey is indeed one of the antagonists in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the story’s foundation is already in place.
Rather than a sad conclusion, the movie seems designed to introduce Jean Grey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe before she appears in Avengers: Secret Wars and the upcoming X-Men film – both of which actress Anya Taylor-Joy is rumored to be joining. Despite trailers attempting to portray her as a villain in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it’s likely that if Taylor-Joy is playing Jean Grey, she’ll ultimately side with Spider-Man. This would follow a pattern established in Spider-Noir, where Spider-Man’s adversaries end up with positive outcomes.
