Alien: Isolation 2 Is Just as Frightening and Difficult as the First Game

It’s been twelve years since Alien: Isolation first captivated players with its truly terrifying and unique horror experience. Unsurprisingly, it quickly became considered one of the greatest horror games ever made, and it still holds up today. However, many excellent survival horror games have been released since then, especially on modern consoles. Now feels like the perfect time to bring back the iconic Alien for a new adventure.

Creative Assembly recently announced Alien: Isolation 2 at Summer Game Fest. Shortly after, I had the chance to play the first 20 minutes of the game. As a big fan of the Alien films and the original Alien: Isolation, I went into the preview with high hopes, even knowing it was just a small glimpse of what Creative Assembly and Sega have been working on.

Details about Alien: Isolation 2 are still limited, but we know the story takes place several months after the original game. Players will follow a new protagonist named Blake, who is surveying an area near Kurosaki Station with two colleagues from Weyland-Yutani when a ship unexpectedly crashes nearby.

Much of the new game takes place outdoors, as it starts and seems to be set on a planet. My first chance to play began in a dark, rainy, and unsettling environment – very reminiscent of the area around the colony in the movie Aliens. I played as Blake and other crew members searching a crashed ship for a way in, hoping to find survivors. After a short time collecting parts to restore power, a Xenomorph suddenly appeared, marking the beginning of Alien: Isolation 2.

For this brief demo, we were tasked with simply reaching the hatch and escaping the ship. You can’t imagine how difficult that was. I took maybe three different routes, twice dropping into the ducts underneath the floor and peering out for the alien before making a run for it. (Amateur tip: don’t do that. Don’t run; it’ll hear you, suddenly appear next to you, and probably impale you with its tail.) Each time I would move behind and under tables, using the environment to make myself small and undetectable. It worked, for the most part, but I still failed a few times.

I’m starting to wonder if I’m just not very skilled at stealth games! Despite years of playing titles like Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed, the first Alien: Isolation, and even A Plague Tale, I struggled with the very first task in this game: escaping the ship. But I enjoy a good challenge, and that actually made the experience more rewarding. It would have been a letdown if the game had been too easy, and if the developers had toned down the horror and difficulty for the next installment.

Fans are excited about this new game, and early gameplay footage suggests Alien: Isolation 2 is off to a good start. The game really pulls you in with its classic Alien aesthetic, amazing sound, terrifying enemy, and atmospheric lighting. It’s a promising beginning, and hopefully, the full game will be fantastic.
