Studio Ghibli, SimCity Collide In New Game You Can Play Free Now

Many relaxing games with an anime style are compared to Studio Ghibli, but the comparison doesn’t always fit well. However, a new game genuinely captures the spirit of Ghibli by taking the city-building idea from games like SimCity and giving it a heartwarming, philosophical touch.

The game’s cartoon style is just the beginning; it establishes a consistent, calming atmosphere throughout. Beyond its soft, watercolor-inspired visuals, the game truly shines through its deep respect for nature, relaxed gameplay, and the inclusion of actual magic.

Spiritstead, recently featured in the Wholesome Direct 2026 showcase, describes itself on Steam as “A city builder set in a world of magic.” Unlike a lot of cozy games, however, the magic doesn’t come in the form of a witch theme or high fantasy hijinks. It’s all a bit more low-key, with “quirky yet helpful spirits” that can add an extra spark of life to the village.

Fans of Studio Ghibli will notice clear inspiration in Spiritstead. For example, a scarecrow’s design – complete with a worn suit and hat – closely resembles Turnip Head from Howl’s Moving Castle. The game’s Steam page highlights its art style as being “a stunning bespoke visual style inspired by Miyazaki films and your favorite cartoons,” and the game certainly delivers on that promise.

Although Spiritstead doesn’t have a confirmed release date, a demo is available now, showcased in the Wholesome Direct 2026 trailer. This demo offers a good look at what the full game will offer. The complete survival mode experience is expected to take players around 6-8 hours, making it shorter than games like Harvest Moon. However, the developers promise high replayability, even though the game’s world remains consistent each time you play.

If you’d rather build and design homes than focus on growing a thriving town, Spiritstead includes a creative mode perfect for freeform building. While it doesn’t allow for cities as massive as those in SimCity, it’s still a great outlet for your imagination and building skills.

It’s hard to capture the charm of Studio Ghibli films and the creativity of SimCity, but SpiritStead is definitely trying! Let’s hope this relaxing game appeals to fans of both.
