MASK Starts A New Era In Style (Review)

MASK first became popular in the 1980s, and even though it hasn’t been on television for years, fans still love it. Now, MASK is back and part of a rapidly expanding comic book universe, and the first issue has finally been released. MASK #1 offers a fresh, exciting direction for the series with plenty of action, making it a great starting point for both longtime fans and newcomers.

As a long-time fan, I was really excited to check out the new MASK #1, and I wasn’t disappointed! Dan Watters, Pye Parr, and Pierluigi Casolino have done a fantastic job of both honoring what made the original series so great and launching it in a fresh direction. Seeing Matt Trakker and Miles Mayhem back in action, with all the fast-paced action we remember, was a blast. What’s really cool is it feels like a perfect jumping-on point for anyone new to MASK, but it also delivers everything longtime fans like me have always loved.

If you’ve seen the original show or collected the toys, you’ll already be ahead of the game. But even if you haven’t, the author quickly explains everything you need to know. The story begins after Miles Mayhem has already assembled his team of villains, and within a few pages, you’ll understand both the global danger they pose and the heroes working to stop them.

Trakker is a fascinating character who always seems to be one step ahead, subtly guiding events. Once you understand his larger plan, you’re immediately hooked. This book interestingly focuses a lot on the villains, and that works really well – they’re memorable, dramatic characters who really stand out.

As a big fan, I was really pleased with the main storyline – it had some cool sci-fi elements that felt perfectly at home in both the MASK world and the larger Energon Universe. And the best part? It referenced the connections to other stories, but didn’t drown you in extra details. It smartly kept the focus right where it should be: on MASK itself. It felt great to not be overwhelmed with backstory and just enjoy the current adventure.

MASK Embraces The Hallmarks of the Original Series With A Modern Twist

Okay, so right off the bat, this new MASK comic #1 really delivers on what made the original series so fun. It’s a fantastic blend of action and cool tech. The Thunderhawk vehicle is even more impressive than I remember, and lots of other classic vehicles make appearances. Seriously, Pye Parr and Pierluigi Casolino absolutely nailed the vehicle action sequences – they look amazing, but they also have this awesome, nostalgic 80s vibe that really captures the spirit of the original MASK.

The larger narrative is also fascinating, particularly the potential consequences of these wormholes and the technology behind them. The story effectively demonstrates the high stakes involved, with one shocking reveal I won’t spoil. Ultimately, this technology is dangerous in anyone’s hands.

The series does a fantastic job of showing us how all the characters are connected and revealing their histories. However, I wish we’d had a little more time to get to know Trakker as an individual, beyond his interactions with others. Hopefully, future issues will delve deeper into his personality, because right now he still feels a bit undefined compared to the other characters.

MASK successfully brings the franchise to a new generation while still satisfying longtime fans with the core elements they love. It’s a great foundation for exciting future stories.
