Doctor Who icon Tom Baker reunites with K9 star in behind the scenes photo for their all-new Sherlock Holmes adventure

Tom Baker, famous for playing Doctor Who, is teaming up again with his former colleague John Leeson for a new story based on Sherlock Holmes.

Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor in the BBC sci-fi series, has returned to the role of Sir Sherlock Holmes for Sir Sherlock: The Sickle and the Sea, a new original audio adventure from AUK Studios.

In this project, Baker will act alongside Richard Leeson, who many Doctor Who viewers recognize as the voice of K9, the Doctor’s robot dog. Katy Ashworth will also return as Emily Lestrade, joining them once again.

A behind-the-scenes photo from the production show Baker and Leeson back together for the new mystery, which follows on from Sir Sherlock: The Red Letter Day, released earlier this month.

Written by Kenton Hall, The Sickle and the Sea finds Sir Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson and Sergeant Emily Lestrade returning from a clandestine visit to the new Soviet Union on behalf of His Majesty’s Government.

However, the trio soon find themselves caught up in a baffling nautical mystery aboard the Russian cargo ship Ryzen, where a body has been discovered – apparently drowned, yet “dry as a bone”.

The story centers around a mystery: is someone seeking revenge, or is something bigger – a revolution – happening? Can Holmes and his friends solve the case and catch the killer before everyone on the ship perishes?

As a film buff, I was really intrigued when Hall described their new adventure. They called it a properly complex mystery for Holmes, now a knight, and explained their thinking behind setting it in the 1920s. They felt that post-war period was a time of huge change, and that naturally led them to a thrilling, shipboard Russian mystery – that’s the story behind ‘The Sickle and the Sea’!

The show’s cast features Baker, Leeson, and Ashworth, as well as Michael Fenton-Stevens, Nicholas Rowe, Kate Harbour, Ben Perkins, Conrad Westmaas, Philip Pope, and Wink Taylor.

Barnaby Eaton-Jones directs and produces the adventure for AUK Studios, as well as serving as script editor, casting director and composer.

He said: “We’re delighted to be able to set sail with another mysterious and intriguing adventure, this time from the pen of Kenton Hall. We hope you’ll support us in this one too, as Sir Sherlock and Watson are quite literally all at sea.”

Baker first portrayed Holmes in a 1982 BBC adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles, alongside Terence Rigby as Doctor Watson. This role came soon after he finished playing the Fourth Doctor, making this new Sherlock Holmes appearance a welcome return to a character he’s known and loved playing since his time on Doctor Who.

Sir Sherlock: The Sickle and the Sea is available to pre-order now via Kickstarter, with CDs and official novelisations also available. The campaign is open until Thursday 9 July 2026.
