The highly anticipated sequel to the horror game Alien: Isolation, called Alien: Isolation 2, was revealed this weekend. While fans might be wondering if the sequel will be similar to the first, creative director Al Hope has stated that the developers at Creative Assembly are aiming for something bigger. In an interview with Xbox Wire, Hope explained that the studio wants to build upon and improve what they achieved in the original game.
One of the biggest changes in Alien: Isolation 2, when compared to its predecessor, is the fact that it will take players planetside rather than keeping them confined to a spaceship. This, Hope said, opened the door for the studio to explore how it could tell an entirely new story. However, he also confirmed that this new story would still be “closely connected” with the first Alien: Isolation.
“Coming out of the tin-can-in-space experience into a new world, onto our planet’s surface, and really opening the canvas and telling a new story – which is still really closely connected to the first game,” he said. “Having this new outpost, Kurosaki Station, that we could bring to life, which would have those claustrophobic interiors where the player feels trapped – and is super familiar to anyone who’s played the first game – but now also allows us to have these hostile exteriors that you’re going to be hunted in.”
The original Alien: Isolation was celebrated for its immersive sound design, and the development team is prioritizing that again for the sequel. They believe sound is a quick way to build tension and fear in players. This, combined with a focus on creating a sense of uncertainty – where players have information their enemy doesn’t, and vice versa – will be central to making Alien: Isolation 2 truly frightening.
Hope emphasized that sound is crucial to the experience, stating, “Audio is half the experience.” For their project, sound is particularly important as a way to quickly influence the player’s emotions and thoughts – essentially, a direct line to the brain. They frame the experience as an ‘information war,’ where the player’s knowledge is constantly contrasted with that of the enemy. Various elements then modify this dynamic, and weather plays a key role as a major disruptor of information. They’ve designed many ways for weather to impact the game, allowing them to significantly expand upon the core ‘Isolation’ experience.
The upcoming game Alien: Isolation 2 will be a first-person horror experience. Set several months after the original Alien: Isolation, players will take on the role of Blake, a Weyland-Yutani employee. Although details are still limited, the announcement trailer confirmed the return of a terrifying Xenomorph that players must avoid and outsmart.
Alien: Isolation 2 is being developed for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
