Christopher Nolan is a highly successful and influential filmmaker today, and his next movie, coming in 2026, promises to be unlike anything he’s done before. While Nolan’s films cover many different genres and stories, certain elements appear frequently in his work. He often plays with time, presenting stories out of order, as seen in films like Memento and Dunkirk. But perhaps his most consistent theme is exploring ideas within the science fiction genre.
Most of Nolanās most popular movies are sci-fi films, causing many audience members to think of him as a sci-fi director. Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet are all explicitly sci-fi films, with each one being built around a concept that acts as the filmās hook. On top of that, The Prestige and Nolanās The Dark Knight trilogy all contain sci-fi elements, furthering his connection with the genre. While Nolan has ventured more into historical dramas in recent years with Dunkirk and Oppenheimer, his next movie is nothing like heās ever done before.
Christopher Nolan Is Releasing His First Fantasy Film In 2026

The Odyssey will release in theaters on July 17, 2026, with the movie being incredibly hyped by fans in the wake of Nolanās Best Picture-winning film Oppenheimer. Interestingly, The Odyssey will be Nolanās first fantasy movie, a genre that he has never before explored. Homerās classic epic is full of gods, magic, monsters, and more, meaning that Nolan has gotten to play in a sandbox that wasnāt available in his previous films.
Although Interstellar drew inspiration from The Odyssey, it wasnāt a fantasy movie. The trailers for The Odyssey have already revealed Polyphemus the Cyclops, a famous character from the Greek story. The stunning design of Polyphemus gives a preview of the filmās quality, as itās just one of the many challenges Odysseus will face on his long journey home.
I have to say, the trailers for The Odyssey suggest a really interesting take on the classic story. Itās going for a much darker, more realistic feel ā almost like theyāre trying to capture that gritty vibe that’s been popular ever since The Dark Knight came out. We’re so used to big fantasy movies being bright and fantastical, so this is a surprisingly grounded approach. What’s really promising, though, is that it seems to stay pretty true to Homer’s original epic. Thatās a relief, especially when you consider that one of the most famous adaptations, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, took a lot of liberties!
Could Fantasy Be Nolanās Next Big Genre?

For years, Christopher Nolan was a leading figure in science fiction, but his recent work suggests a shift in focus. While the disappointing performance and reviews of Tenet might have played a role, his move from Interstellar to Dunkirk hinted at a growing interest in historical stories. Though Dunkirk and Oppenheimer led many to expect more historical dramas, his dedication to The Odyssey suggests his next films might explore the fantasy genre.
If Nolanās 2026 film does well, he could adapt many classic stories, like The Odyssey. A natural follow-up would be Homerās other famous epic, The Iliad. He could also tackle tales like Beowulf or The Epic of Gilgamesh. These stories havenāt been definitively made into movies yet, and Nolan is uniquely capable of bringing their grand scope to life on the big screen.
Nolan is already well-suited for tackling the fantasy genre, as it contains many elements that are already present in his sci-fi movies. Faraway fantasy lands arenāt that different from faraway planets, the past isnāt that different from the distant future, and gods and monsters arenāt that different from aliens and robots. Nolan has already proven that he can ground the fantastical and use these elements to explore complex themes, something that could easily translate to the fantasy genre.
On top of that, Nolanās work with non-chronological timelines already proves that he can tackle stories on different timescales. Interstellar takes place over decades, meaning that years-spanning epics shouldnāt be a problem for him. The Odyssey could prove that Nolan is capable of handling fantasy material, setting him up for a wildly different directorial future.
