A new fantasy book coming out in 2026 will revisit a popular fictional universe, which will likely remind fans of a cancelled Netflix series they loved. Netflix has a habit of ending shows, especially expensive ones in the fantasy and sci-fi genres. This is particularly frustrating when the shows are based on existing books or stories, leaving devoted fans without a complete adaptation – and that disappointment can linger for years.
As a big fan of that cancelled Netflix show, I’m both thrilled and heartbroken about the news. While we didn’t get the continuation we hoped for on screen, the creator is thankfully continuing the story in a new book! It’s already shaping up to be one of the biggest fantasy releases of 2026, but honestly, it also just reminds me of everything we won’t get to see adapted. It’s a bittersweet feeling!
2026’s New Six of Crows Book Is a Reminder of the Adaptation We’ll Never Get

Leigh Bardugo, author of the Grishaverse novels, is releasing a new story set in the world of Six of Crows this June. Titled Six of Crows: A Darker Shore, Letters From Ketterdam, the story picks up with Kaz and Inej years after the original duology. We’ll find out what the pair have been doing – apparently, causing trouble for criminals in Ketterdam! The story is told through letters exchanged between Kaz and Inej, which are discovered and examined by investigators looking into a mysterious event.
It’s great that we’re getting to read letters between Kaz and Inej, but it’s disappointing we won’t see their relationship develop on screen. If Netflix hadn’t cancelled Shadow and Bone, we probably would have gotten a Six of Crows spin-off, maybe even with glimpses of what the future held for the characters. Showrunner Eric Heisserer shared his plans for adapting the Crows’ story with Entertainment Weekly in 2023, but those plans were unfortunately cancelled along with the main series. Given how well-cast Shadow and Bone was and how vividly Netflix brought Leigh Bardugo’s world to life, cancelling it was a really disappointing decision. While this new release is enjoyable, it also serves as a reminder of what we lost.
The New Fantasy Release Makes Shadow and Bone’s Cancellation Sting All Over Again

Returning to Ketterdam, even for a new adventure, is a tragic reminder of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone cancellation. There are clearly more stories to tell in this world, and there’s still demand for them. However, they won’t make their way to the screen, as the Grishaverse’s franchise potential ended before it really began. Perhaps if the author ever releases more books in this series — Six of Crows 3 would certainly be welcome — Hollywood will see its potential once more. But that would still require a remake of some sort, and Shadow and Bone already had the perfect foundation for a Six of Crows show. Needless to say, fans will always feel disappointed about the spinoff they almost had. And those feelings are bound to resurface whenever the magic of this world makes a comeback, this year included.
