Okay, so the summer blockbuster season for 2026 hasn’t even really started, but Hollywood is always planning ahead. And I’ve got some interesting news on that front. Lionsgate just announced a release date for their upcoming action thriller, Karoshi, and honestly, it’s coming to theaters much sooner than I expected. Plus, we’ve just gotten a good look at some new details about the film, which is produced by Chad Stahelski – and that’s definitely got my attention.
As reported by Deadline, Takashi Doscher’s film Karoshi will be released in theaters on January 29, 2027. It will be competing with Paramount’s The Rescue, which stars Brandon Sklenar, known for his roles in 1923 and The Housemaid. We’ve also learned more about the film’s plot, and it appears to be a more complex story than initially described as a simple corporate thriller.
Karoshi Sounds Like a Slick, Futuristic Collision of Culture and Corporate
According to Deadline, the upcoming film Karoshi is set in a Manhattan of the near future, where intense company loyalty and cultural norms have dramatically changed daily life. The story follows an outsider who investigates a powerful corporation after an employee dies, uncovering a disturbing and violent system hidden beneath a seemingly perfect exterior. This premise feels both technologically advanced and deeply personal, fitting with the style of director Doscher’s previous work. While not yet widely known, Doscher is acclaimed for films like Only and Still. Both films, particularly Still with its atmospheric Southern Gothic style and Only with its post-apocalyptic setting, demonstrate Doscher’s skill at minimalist storytelling. This approach could be particularly effective in portraying a futuristic, corporate-controlled world. He also expertly builds tension and explores intimate character relationships, qualities that would serve Karoshi well.
The film features a compelling cast including Teo Yoo (known for Past Lives), Isabel May (Scream 7), Takehiro Hira (Shogun), Bill Camp (Presumed Innocent), Show Kasamatsu (Tokyo Vice), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked). Though details about the characters are still under wraps, the ensemble suggests a rich and diverse group of performers, hinting at complex roles and plenty of excitement. Notably, Takehiro Hira, who played a villain in Shogun, is reportedly taking on a similar role in this film.
The film Karoshi will be released in theaters on January 29, 2027. Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment will produce the movie alongside Jason Spitz, Alex Young, and Nathan Kahane.
