Alex Hanscombe‘s life was forever changed on July 15, 1992.
Rachel Nickell, 23, was brutally murdered – stabbed 49 times – while at Wimbledon Common in London. Her two-year-old son witnessed the attack. He was found holding onto her body and later told his father, André Hanscombe, that a “bad man” with a knife had approached them from behind, as detailed in the Netflix documentary The Murder of Rachel Nickell.
Police finally solved the case after more than ten years, and in 2008, serial rapist Robert Napper admitted guilt to manslaughter.
Now 36, Alex is speaking out about how the tragedy affected him for the rest of his life.
He explained in the documentary that seeing such terrible things as a young child destroys the feeling of safety children have, the belief that their parents can always keep them from getting hurt, no matter how hard they try.
As a life coach, I’ve seen many navigate profound loss, and Alex’s story really resonated with me. He explained that his father and he shared an unspoken understanding – they both knew his mother loved him and wouldn’t have intentionally abandoned him. Because of this, they simply didn’t discuss her or the past. Yet, despite the silence, Alex carried a deep-seated anger, a feeling of helplessness that he couldn’t have prevented the situation, no matter how hard he tried. It’s a powerful reminder that grief can manifest in complex ways, even without direct conversation about the loss.
Alex shared that he was bothered by having to participate in interviews with a child psychologist and police, all while his dad supervised, in an attempt to recall details about the crime and help solve it.
He explained he felt a lot of anger over past experiences, especially the long and drawn-out therapy sessions. What bothered him most was constantly being forced to relive a specific traumatic day and being told how he should feel about it, a burden he continued to carry with him.
In fact, Alex lost respect and trust for his father during the process.
Looking back, the core issue was my dad’s role as the family protector. He felt he’d failed in that duty, and honestly, it created a lot of tension growing up. We really clashed a lot during my teenage years as a result. It was a tough time for all of us, trying to navigate those feelings and rebuild trust.

In his book, The Murder of Rachel Nickell, André acknowledged that Alex had a difficult childhood. He explained, “I was the rightful target of the anger, and I felt immense guilt for not having shielded my family.”
André was at work when Rachel was attacked. Afterwards, he and Alex moved to France to cope with their loss, as the case went unsolved for many years. Finally, in 2004, a DNA discovery provided a breakthrough in the investigation.

Over the years following Rachel’s tragic death, Alex has healed and come to terms with both his family relationships and the trauma he went through.
He explained that they had to come to terms with the situation themselves, which he felt was ultimately positive. He realized they had no other option but to accept it. His parents believed the spirit lives on forever, and that his mother would always be with him, no matter where he went.
Alex shared that his father gave up everything to pursue his beliefs, even without knowing the outcome. He admired his father’s courage to follow his heart and felt deeply grateful for his sacrifice.

O.J. Simpson, who passed away in April 2024 after fighting cancer, was legally found responsible for the 1994 murders in a civil court. However, he was found not guilty in the criminal trial. Some people believe Tupac is still alive, but the rapper, known for his song “Changes,” was actually killed in 1996. The case remains unsolved.

As a lifelong fan, I still remember the shock when Biggie Smalls was tragically shot and killed in a drive-by, just a year and a half after losing Tupac. It’s heartbreaking that, even now, nobody has ever been brought to justice for taking his life – his killer remains a mystery.

The trial of Casey Anthony, Caylee’s mother, received a lot of media attention, but she was found not guilty of murdering her daughter. Because of this verdict, the mystery of who killed Caylee remains unsolved.

As a bit of a true crime buff, I’ve always been fascinated by the case of Elizabeth Short. Tragically murdered in 1947, her death immediately captivated the public and the media. She became known after her death as ‘The Black Dahlia,’ a haunting nickname, but the really sad part is, even now, decades later, her killer has never been found. It’s a mystery that continues to intrigue and frustrate, and a stark reminder of a life cut far too short.

In 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered with an axe, but their daughter, Lizzie Borden, was put on trial and found not guilty. The case remains unsolved to this day.

In 1888, a serial killer began terrorizing London. Over a century later, the mystery of Jack the Ripper’s identity still hasn’t been solved.

In 1982, Chicago experienced a series of tragic deaths caused by someone tampering with Tylenol capsules. Seven people, including children, died after taking capsules laced with cyanide. While the original perpetrator remains unidentified, several similar crimes followed the initial poisonings.

The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer active in Northern California from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, and his true identity is still a mystery. He called himself the “Zodiac” in letters he sent to newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area. These letters included four coded messages, and so far, only one has been successfully deciphered.
